View Full Version : Not getting airflow through rad

Ok, since I got home from school, i decided to change the water in my setup and mess with some stuff. One thing I did was trim the tip off of my temp probe and cut the heatshrink back a little bit to make better contact between WB and core (per Hoot's instructions).

Well since I did that, I've noticed my temp reads about 3-4C higher than before. This is what i wanted, because i know now that it's a more accurate reading, but I started to get concerned. My chip is now about 15C over my case temp:mad:

I have also noticed that I can barely feel any aire coming out the rear 120mm fan from the rad. I'll post a pic to show where my rad is. I have since removed the 2 spare 5-1/4 plates on the front to get more fresh air to the rad, and I will soon add an 80mm fan there.

I have a DD heater core - does anyone have problems with airflow through this rad? It's at the top back of my case, and no, the fans arent fighting each other.

you can find pics here. (http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showthread.php?threadid=65113)

I can't quite tell from your pictures, but, do you have a shroud between the rad and the fan? It doesn't look like it. If not, I would recommend one. And if there is, make sure you have at least an inch of space between them to allow for proper air flow.

Spacers and a shroud might help. but perhaps you need a higher CFM fan. Also, 15C is not really a radical difference between ambient and CPU.

To anyone that read this thread before - I figured out what was wrong. The antec truepower that I just got has "fan-only" molex connectors. Sounds good, right? Wrong! they control the rpms of the fan based on the temp in the PSU just like the PUS fans. I just found this out today, plugged that fans into a regular power connector and viola!! dont know why i didnt think of this earlier, oh well.

Interesting. Good to know. Are the "fan-only" connectors marked as such?

yes, they are only a yellow +12 wire and a ground, no +5 wire. The manual does say [about the fan only connectors] "You may connect your case fans to it and have the TruePower circuitry control the speed of the case fans." It goes on to say for maximun cooling, use the regular 4-pin connector, but "noise will not be reduced."

Live and learn i guess. Anyone with a TruePower, just know that your fans wont be spinning at full speed on the fan only connector unless it's hot hot hot:mad: in your case.
