I just got a P/// 500 (100/512) Katmai today, to put in my niece's rig (that I built for her for Christmas). Right now, she's running a Celeron 366, so this will be a decent upgrade for her.

I've got one lone intel rig these days, built around a P///700E, and an Abit SH6. I pulled the 700E, and put the 500 Katmai in....

Nothing. Fans spun, but no beep, no post, nada.. ?!?! I cleared the CMOS...nada. Cleaned the contacts on the CPU....nope. Blew out the cpu slot with compressed air....wrong again.

I put a P II 350 in...posted. 700E back in. Posted. 500 Katmai....nothing. I was just about to start packing it back up to return to the sender, when I got a PM, saying try another board... This person had a C366 that ran fine on one board, but wouldn't boot on another.

I dug out an A-Open AX6BC that I got a while ago, to build a Folding rig around (got w/ the P II 350). Damned if'n that Katmai didn't fire right up.....

I've never had that happen to me before. Curious how the SH6 will run a P II 233/300 (66 bus) and a 350 (100 bus), and my 700E Coppermine (up to 975 or so on an ice cold day, 933 usually), but not the 500 Katmai.

I feel like an a-hole, after trying everything but a different board, and was about ready to give up. Just never had that happen before.

Now, I'm just hoping that the A-Trend mobo in my niece's rig will run the Katmai...otherwise she's getting an A-Open for her birthday, with the 500....:D

Ahhhh...the mysteries of life.....

well all get stumpers sometimes dont we...
Hate to ask this, but got a somewhat current BIOS?
Or did you try using the dip switches opposed to SoftMENU III ?

I honestly don't know which revision BIOS is on the SH6, and I set the CPU settings thru the SoftMenu III, not by the dip switches.

I'll have to re-read the manual, and pay attention next time I boot the SH6 up, to see what BIOS it does have.

One would think if it'll support those other chips, it would run the Katami core no problem, though...

I didn't get it to run on the SH6, so it really isn't a huge concern, my concern more so is that it'll run on the board in my niece's PC....

If I have to swap out the motherboard in her rig, so be it, but I'd rather not (the A-Trend runs the Via Apollo Pro chipset, and Windows might not like the change without a format and reinstall...).

We'll see what happens...thanks for the reply, jay. I'll look into those ideas.. :)

Mr.B,

Don't go tossin out that Sh6, Im thinkin a new Bios is in order like Jay mentioned.

The Sh6 is a mobo that holds its value like no other, even today the cheapest you can buy one is $163.25 (Shipped)

He wasn't dumping the SH6. That's what he runs the P3 700 in. He was just interested in the whys and wherefores of two procs working flawlessly in it and another proc (that age wise fits between the two) won't boot.

Same thing had happened to me too.
About 3 years ago,i had a QDI Brilliant mobo that supported all the P-III Katmai cores up to 600mhz.
Back then i was using a celeron 366 and i decited to upgrade my cpu....so i bought a 550 Katmai.
I put into the mobo...nothing....cleared cmos...nothing....install the latest bios...nothing.
Just before returning it back to the store...i checked the Katmai to a friend's Abit.....it worked instantly....???
