I was making an image of a 4.2gb hdd using Ghost 2000 set to high compression and putting the image onto a 1.1 gb hdd. It failed due to insufficent space on the 1.1 gb drive. If this is so, how can poeple claim to put an image on a CDR

You can span CDRs with some versions of Ghost. There are also options to split the images for recording to CDRs.

Are you using GhostPE(Personal Edition) or any other 5.XX release? Looks like you do not have the higher compression available in the more current versions.

The only option I see that you can do w/o buying any new software is to transfer certain data that is not system related to CD then compress what you have left.

It depends on what is on the drive. I have images of 4.3GB drives that are basically the OS, Office and a few other things. They are about 500MB and fit on a bootable CD very nicely. I do not know about Ghost spanning CDs, I don't have that version. The only thing I can think of is to save it on a larger hard drive, then use something like WinRar to split it into CD sized pieces.

Compression won't do too much if you're trying to compress "already compressed" files, ie: MP3s, some some formats, ZIP Files.

If you have alot of them, then your 4.3 gigs worth won't compress very well... on the other hand, if you have 4.3 gigs worth of text files (which compress quite nicely), you could get it to fit on a CD.

Do you have NERO 5? NERO has the option to back up a HDD, so I guess it will split the HDD content automatically

If you are using Ghost, you just need "A" burning program, it can be any, as long as you can burn a data file.

If you want to back up your hard drive using the burner's utility, go ahead, but Ghost provides an "exact" image of what's on the hard drive.
