Opteron=Hammer=We've all heard about it.

I personally like the Clawhammer codename better than their pathetic attempt at sounding 'futuristic'.

Opteron. Sounds like the name of one of those family 'sports' sedan type cars, like the Sebring or some other gay ass car like that.

it's the SledgeHammer, the server version of the Hammer core. Gonna work in 2-8way SMP mode. I think it'll come out at about the same speed as the Clawhammer will, so you might have to wait for the Clawhammer before you know that ;). Anyways, it's gonna cost big bucks so unless your running a big business, the price isn'T worth it.

Yup it's the Hammer 64bit Series.

Minoukat brang up a good point, that alot of people won't be buying the Hammers. They're 1000.00 dollar chips for really huge advanced servers.

People will be looking into the Clawhammer for desktop users.

they are both 64-bits CPUs (SledgeHammer [Opteron] and ClawHammer [Athlon]), just that the first has added features useful for Advanced Servers and powerful mainframes

Yea for that price you can almost buy a high end PIV. Just kidding, they are only $600

Still a heck of a bargain, compared to an Itanium.

...at around $7K.

Depending on Price/Performance, I could see buying a Dual Opteron for the home office. I could probably crunch some serious SETI units with it.;)

BTW, you won't find a Hammer in a mainframe.
