I seem to have a really strange problem with temps on my system.

Specs are as in sig.
Current BIOS version is 8H.

CPU Currently running at 115FSB default vcore (2300Ghz). PCI/AGP locked at 33/66Mhz.

I have a four Papst 26.5cfm fans (two intake and two exhaust), and a Papst 19cfm cooling the HD.

Ambient temperature is typically 18c - 20c
Hardware doctor (and BIOS) consistenly reports System temperature between 29c and 31c (regardless whether the case side is on or not).

CPU Idle temp (from both BIOS and hardware doctor) is typically 45c, and load temp is around the 52/53c region. This seems a little high to me, but in itself not a big deal.

Now the strange thing is, I have tried three different coolers (stock Intel, Coolermaster Fujiyama IHC-L71, and now the Alpha PAL8942 with a YS-Tech 80mm) and these temps seem to be pretty constant - always about 45 idle and 53 load! :eh?:

I am using ASIII - and I am only using a v. small amount and
making sure it is spread evenly as per the AS instructions. In all three cases, the HSF's appear to be correctly mounted. At full load, the Alpha feels warm to the touch, but not hot - checked and double checked it is making good contact before I fitted it all back together.

Anybody any ideas what is going on here?

Is the IT7 likely to be way off with the temps, or is it possible that the CPU itself is the problem? Any ideas?

Try Motherboard monitor 5 and see if you get the same results. You can get it at Guru3D (http://guru3d.com) . Seems strange to me. Maybe someone else has a better idea. bump

I think this is nothing to worry about. My 1.8a @ 2.2GHz (122MHz FSB) is idle on 42 degrees and full load on 48. My system temp is idle on 31 and under full load 36-37.

I am using the Intel stock cooler and two case fans which are working really well.

But one thing surprises me: the three different heatsinks you tried! Did you try the Alpha with the low noise version of the YS Tech or the power version?? That could result in a difference of 3 degrees.

53 degrees are nothing to worry about for a P4. When you see Asus users with their temps, you can't believe them. See my thread here: http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=94508

They report crazy low temps even someone who sits in Florida with ambient temps of 30 degrees and his CPU idles at 33 or so!! I would not believe that!!!

Hope this helps.

Bull > I have tried MBM5 and it always reports a CPU temp of 90c, and promptly wants me to shut the system down. I am pretty sure I am using the right Winbond sensor. Does report system temp the same as Hardware Doctor though.

I agree, that in isolation the temps themselves are nothing to worry about as long as the system is running stable which it is, but its really bugging me that I used three different coolers right accross the full range of performance and have yet to see any difference between them.
On the Alpha I have the 45.2cfm/34.2dBA YS-Tech, and it is sucking away from the Alpha as per instructions - although I have seen a certain amount of debate over which performs better - sucking or blowing.

It just seems to be more than a little coincidence that there appears to be no performance difference between the three HSFs particularly between the Alpha and Intel Stock (using thermal pad).
