The craziest thing just happened. I was playing RTCW and suddenly I noticed this burnt-rubber smell. I looked down and there was smoke coming out of my case, not just a little it was really all over the place. Anyway I shutdown and the red(12v) speaker wire had been totally burnt, the wire its self was scorched and the rubber had been pretty badly burnt which is why I smelled the burnt rubber. The whole wire was totally burnt, from the little speaker to the connector near the mobo. I'm pretty sure I figured out the problem though. I had recently taken out my floppy drive for some reason or another and I didn't bother to mount it back in so I just put it down on the speaker without thinking. My guess is power from the floppy went through the speaker and through the red 12v wire burning it like crazy. I'm pretty sure this is it because the black(ground wire was not harmed at all. Lucky it wasn't something important like my cpu or mobo!!!:D

remember everything in your puter runs on smoke.
when the smoke comes out it stops running.

i think we must be the luckiest group on the internet,we always seam to get lucky on these things and not lose anything major.

Last time I saw smoke was when I was fooling with an old socket 7 machine I'd been given. I stuck a 32 meg DIMM in the second slot, and as soon as I hit the power smoke started pouring out! I took out the memory, scraped out the slot, and it ran fine! I never tried to use that slot again though. I threw the burned memory in the trash as well.

i had smoke come out of an amd 233 machine once, but that was because i wasn't yet familiar with zif sockets
I crammed the cpu in there as well as i could, hit the power sw, and watched her burn. damn that smell was foul :)

never done that again though.
