View Full Version : How often do you re-seat your HS?

I know this is kinda a double post and by no means am I trying to pad my posts....but only TTV7+ owners were responding to my thread on this subject.
I am wondering on average how many peope need to adjust their HS or re-apply thermal paste to maintain low temps.
I expect that once it is seated properly and paste is applied correctly that you would not need to touch your HS for months.
I have had to re-seat my HS 3 times in 4 months to maintain low temps...is this unusual?
The less I mess w/ the HS the less chances of killing my proc as it has a chip on it already.
and yes I know that bumping or nudging the HS can cause it to offset and temps may rise.
I haven't touched mine in almost a year & all I do is clean the heatsink wiith some air & detach the fan once in a while to oil it. How much temp increase do you get that makes you reseat your HSF?

My temp should be 46c or lower on a cool day like today. At present it is 49.5c. on a warm day it can go up to 52c.....it is nothing to worry about but when I am used 43-46c on load and come home to find 50c I begin to wonder.
Keep a record of your ambient temps & CPU temps to see if its really a cause for concern. You might have also realised that certain WUs seem to heat up our CPUs more than normal.

Jeez sonny, you may have nailed it...that may explain the peaks and valleys in my temps...I guess there may be more factors at play for me to consider, thanks for the ideas!
I tend to jump the gun to easilly w/ out checking out all the facts....if Jumping to conclusions were a sport I'd be a World class athelete:D
But thanks again, that is why i posted so I could get some more ideas from you fine folk:)
Been a month since I have (First time I got a Alpha PAL8045).

I usually reseat my heatsinks once every 2 months or so. I basically tear down the system clean everything out and rebuild it again.

I dont reseat my'n ,theres no need to for me. Your probably adding either to much or not enough thermal paste. Another thing is for you people who just glob thermalpaste on the core, then put the heatsink on. That's probably the stupidest thing you could do, because it would liquify.
In a way... Its good to reseat your HEATSINK about every 6 months. Not 3 times in 4 Months.

Actually I have been using toothpaste as thermal paste and try to cover the whole processer, not just the core...:p
Why I was asking Haywire is that after a month of low temps they begin to rise a little...I thought perhaps it may have been due to vibration as Yodums says or some other mysterious malady. Right now I am paying better atention to my temps and see a drop from 49.50c to 47.50..both at load. So I figure that since the Thermal paste was applied correctly and the HS was seated correctly to begin w/ there must be other factors to consider. Perhaps since I am now Folding instead of running SETI the CPU may be working harder for some proteins as Sonny said.
My room temps is not a issue since today it is cool and if it is a hot day I have A/C.
So basically by letting me Know that once the HS and paste is applied there is no need to re-seat my TtV7+ that helps me look in other areas for possible things that may casue my temps to rise.
I appreciate the feedback and I apologize for my Sarcasm Haywire....ahhh, who am I kidding, I use Sarcasm every chance I get:p
BTW: Haywire, what happened to all your stars..thought you had more than one and where ya been?

Well I was in the mood for some fiddl'in so i opened up the case and tidied up some wires(I have a duct so messy wires was never a issue..just looks sloppy) and re-applied some thermal paste. Upon reboot I was back down to 45c(load)..before I re-applying paste I was at 47c(load). So it really was not my HS that was causing spikes in temps...a 2c diff was not much. SO now I know that some days I may get as high as 50-52c and low as 45c on load..must be due to room temps and diff kind of Proteins.
Thanks again all for the tips and helpfil advice!!!!! You guys rock and this forum is the best...next to the xxx forums:p
