I just got an old machine (intel 486dx2 66mhz etc.) that was struck by lightning and then afterwards didn't work very well as you can imagine.
I tried cd-rom/floppı/hdd in another computer and they work fine.
When I boot it however, the hdd does not spin up nor does the cd-rom hatch open.
This would mean that the 12v line is busted right?
I'm not sure about it.
The psu is an old 150w with, belive it or not, temprature controlled fan!
It didn't make any noise at all when I first booted.
But wait a minute!
Fan = 12v??????
It certainly should be.
Could this mean that it is working after all?
I cant tell for sure until I get my voltmeter and that wont be for another week or something, I'm tied up here painting the house (no not litteraly!)
Could it just be some little wire loose on the psu circuit?
I found a fuse there but it was intact.
Give me a hand with it if you know how to fix this thing.

If it took a lightning hit and then stopped working, but the fan fires up, I would suspect that the PSU isn't the problem. There is a good chance that the mobo or CPU got fried.

No you see, it does boot!
It counts the memory and all.
I can't be 100% certain because I don't have keyboard that works with it right now but I will pretty soon.
Btw, there are no other fans than the psu fan in this machine.
I'm still not sure what the problem is but surely not mobo cpu or ram.
