Looking at this catigory, I'v always wondered if there was even such a thing as sound card overclocking, and what could it posibly improve?

There was a thread here somewhere about this, ask DS-Master, he has the link

LOL i wonder what would it improve :/.......faster winamp I guess

i searched no find, maybe if i overclock the soundcard it will use less CPU cycles

Hey Bigfoot,

If you got one of the Sound Blaster Lives! series or Audigy series by Creative Labs then you may be interested in the kX project,

http://www.kxproject.com/

These drivers not only overclock the Sound Card but also unlock more possibilities with it like taking out the bugs which plagued Windows XP with Live/Audigy.

By overclocking the sound card, you help to further reduce the stress to the CPU when running intense enviroment applications such as an EAX based title.

Hope this helps and use these drivers at your own risk.

Those driver's are made more for musician's and not so much for gaming. Although it's worth a shot. I'm downloading them now. I'll probobly install them tonight to see what it's all about.

all i have to say is why would u overclock a sound card lol whats the point

Why? Why would you want to overlclock an already good processor? BECASUE YOU CAN!!!

Actually, it could increase performance dramatically. Just recently a major hardware site had a comparison review of modern sound cards and the cards actually affected performance!

Why overclock a sound card??

I'll tell you why. It's the principle of the thing. If we have the ability, there doesn't have to be a reason, only a desire. Hell, I'd overclock my keyboard if I could.

Don't see anything about tweak keyboard, but i do find something about tweak mouse.

I can see why someone would wonder. The soundcard is probobly one of the most overlooked part's in a computer as far as performance (Not quality though). If you can overclock the soundcard it can possibly relieve the system CPU of some CPU cycle's. Thus increasing performance. Maybe that slight stutter when there's alot of action going on in your favorite game will go away do to this. I can see how it would benifit a person if you can do it.

Whoa... thanks for all the replies. I installed those drivers on my system today, I dont exactly sea any clock settings but I notice there is this mapping feature of some sort, I know sound cards do many tasks in parallel, Hence: 64 Voices, and so fourth, I wonder if thats what I can change. Or if there is actually some clock speads somewere. I think I'll go PM DS-Master and point him hear for anyone else who has questions.

As far as overclocking the sound card goes, you only get the choice of running it either at defualt (Creative drivers) or at 110MHz Live / 220MHz Audigy (KX Drivers).

Maybe in the future, kX will implement a performance bar that will allow you to manually set the frequency of your DSP. Wouldnt that be nice!

That would be nice, do you know what creative's defaults are?

100 SB Live!/ 200 Audigy (and to think I bought a Pentium MMX 166 from Gateway for $2,500 6 years ago, now its lapped by a sound card, crap.)

Here is an example of how much sound cards can effect your FPS in games... sure its from Tomshardware.. but at least its not an AMD vs Intel type of test...

hmmm, how about overclocking floppy drives....

Ha, OC a floppy drive, that would be nice. How about OC'ing my hard drive? CD-ROM?

Check-X
06-22-02, 02:57 PM
Ok so there's a actual valid question. what kind of performance gain could you get from OC'ing your NIC card? OC"ing your bus speed on your mobo would improve data transfer rates between the card and your CPU, but wouldn't upgrading a 10Mb/s card to a 100Mb/s card (or switching it fmr 10 to 100) be enough? if you did OC the NIC card what would it improve? Less demand on the processor?? honeslty I have NO clue on this one..

DS-Master, thnx for the link on the kX project!!! I can't believe you can use A3D 2.0 on a creative card!! I myself am a Counter-Strike player (have been since beta 5.2). the CPL (pro CS league) has banned the use of A3D 2.0 in CS because it gives the users a FAR superior advantage over people using A3D 1.0 or EAX. the Half-Life engine was made withh A3D 2.0 /OpenGL combo in mind, and just post-coded for D3D/EAX/A3D 1.0 technologies. I have a SB Live! value and if I can get A3D 2.0 going I'll see what I can tweak up! My team isn't in any CPL league so I can use A3D 2.0 all I want :D

bigfoot
06-22-02, 08:58 PM
I hate to sound dum, but what is A3D 2.0 vs. A3D 1.0 or EAX. Are they all sound effects engins, is A3D 2.0 a lot better that the A3D 1.0?

Check-X
06-23-02, 01:39 AM
A3D 1.0 and 2.0 were sound engines made by Aureal for Aureal cards in the mid-late 90's, Aureal went tits up shortly after. EAX was made by Creative Labs, now DirectX uses its own DirectSound which is slightly based on A3D technology. and yes 2.0 was FAR better than 1.0 but very few cards made it to market with this as a supported feature (Diamond MX-80 I was one I think..).

I managed to get my hands on an Diamond MX-300 card
that supports A3D 1.0 , A3D 2.0 , EAX, with golden pluggs
and wires. This card is the ultimate game card, the
only problem is that when creative saw that diamond
were making better cards than them, they bought
the soundcard part of diamond, and stopped it,
so there is problems finding drivers for it. :(

Thats right.. it was the Mx-300.. I was looking into one of those when I baught my SB Live! value. but if my Live Value can do A3D 2.0 I'll be SET!

What games use A3D 2.0

I thought that A3D 3.0 was released a long time ago, and Quake 3 was one of the first games to support it. *shrug*

Overclocking the sound cards helps the processor to work faster producing the way it communicates with the sound card. You may not think of it much, cause it's just for sound. Personally, i wouldn't do it, not much of a point really, it still plays sound if it's not overclocked, but there's people out there that would overclock anything if they could for the fun outta it. So if you're one of those people, go for it!!!

Check-X
06-27-02, 02:51 AM
Not many, Games that were Developed within the same time frame as Half-Life was should have A3D 2.0, but within a year or so after Half-Life hit the shelves Aureal went tits up.

ANy links on their performance? The reason teh GameTheaterXP and Creative cards are so good is because they use very few CPU cycles.

Turtle Beach Santa Cruz ring a bell?:D Voyetra makes 'em. TerraTec's (TerraTec.net) 6FireDMX 24/96 records and outputs at true 24/96, but it does kinda blur up when you play FPS's with lots of enemies, i.e. DOOM II: Nirvana: Ultra-Violence.

So how DO you overclock your sound card? Also how are those KX drivers? Have any of you tried and is the difference noticable?

I installed them but there's no noticible difference, I'm waiting till the let you change the spead yourself, the control panles are a nice touch though.
