i'm at college right now and a lot of kids around here are having their one-year warranties expire on their dells and compaqs and hps and all those ******** machines. so my friends (who are not very computer savvy) are asking me, since their warranties have expired, to take ME off their computers and upgrade them to XP. one of my friends bought and we upgraded his hp but it runs pretty slow now. i know somebody else who that happened to also. has anybody else seen and consistencies with these problems? most of the later hps and dells are somewhat high end machines and i think they should be performing a little better. any ideas about this?

those machines would need at least 256 MB of RAM and really, 512 is where I would run them at. Also you will need at least 400 Mhz CPU's.

Is that what they have?

Big problem with HPs and Compaqs and the like is that they have their own version on Windows (essentially, anyway) that's specifically tailored to their proprietary parts. This means that other OS installs won't work nearly as well.

There's also the hardware limitation as Tracert mentioned. XP requires a lot more resources than any 9x version ever did.

also, if you do an upgrade you are looking for problems. I suggest to backup all data, format and do a fresh install...

I agree to all that...XP will add alot of overhead so you'll need more RAM. But, it's SO much better in terms of stability...

Also, the fresh format is a must...epsecially on a WinMe format thats over a year old...

i find it best to do a clean install on XP...
My "X" m8 did the upgrade and now it takes him 3min to load up IE and 5 min to open a normal speed page... no kidding!

you are crazy you actually think microsoft would taillor make an os for a company that is horribly misaccurate computer companys such as hp and compaq do have there own proprietary hardware that is a reason that some sony laptops dont work worth a damn with xp but any way Eil Atan did you try takin off all the graphical stuff with xp it will speed up a lot if you tweak all the settting and turn the pretty stuff off
