Ok My brother an AMD XP 2100+ and with the stock heatsink. And the A7v333 motherboard. Ok we applied the heatsink wrong at first it was backwards and half of the core was exposed and we ran it for ten minutes. Then we took it apart and fixed it and put some artic silver on it and put the computer togather and when we let the machine idle the temprature just keeps raising .5 degrees Celcius every minute or so. When it gets to 80 degrees celcius we shut it down for the reasons of not burning the core. Any suggestions as to why this AMD is doing this would be very helpful.
It shuts down because your temperatures are at 80 degrees, which is like the melting point for that core.
It seems to me as if there isn't any contact between the two surafces. Make sure you installed the heatsink the right way (Attaching clip on right side, supporting clip on left side). Make sure there's a thin layer of thermal paste. Make sure you cleaned both surfaces with a lint-free cloth and reapply.

We applie it wrong at first and half of the core was exposed. Would that ruin the core?

To see if the core is damaged, look for tiny chips around the edges and corners esepcially. The reason for you 80*C temps is probably because you have little or no contact between the core and your HSF. Also how much AS did you apply? did you read the instructions on their site? Try remounting your HSF very carefully.
Good Luck :)

Been there myself, but I had a piece of plastic inbetween HSF and processor. Duh.
When proper contact was made, all was well.
Just as a way out possibility, is the case open to the air? Could be acting like an oven if the case is ultra cheap.
Well, if it posts and all, I'm pretty sure it's ok. But it seems to me if there's no contact. Did you have the motherboard out when you put in the heatsink? If so, shine the CPU Gap + Heatsink in a light when your done. If light goes through, it means there's not 100% contact.

Try to lap the heatsink, it may be that it is extremely warped/not flat or has a lot of machining marks
