I have seen a few places like MicroWareHouse selling laptops with a finger pad scanner built into them. I was wondering if it was possible to buy one somewhere and hook it up to my desktop and have it scan my finger to turn it on or to have me log in... does anyone know where you can find these scanners?

Also has anyone ever tried this?

Check this (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=63&manufactory=1618&DEPA=1) out.

It's $160 bucks, but not a bad deal for what it does.

Just don't lose your thumb, or you'll never get in!:D

Been trying to get my hands on one of these (http://www.btcusa.com/products_finger_print_wire.html#1) , for a long time now. I game from the left side of my keyboard, and 2 of my keyboards have teh same layout as this on, but my company would have to order 100 units for me to get it. Hence why I've been searching for a long while.

Hi there, I am currently employed by a company in this market... heh, as such I know quite a bit about this. There are 3 major types of fingerprint sensors available these days, the old school optical, these usually work pretty well but tend to be fairly expensive and wear out quickly, then there are the capacitive sensors, these are solid state sensors that image your fingerprint based on the skins capacitance, the trouble here is that the image quality is fairly low, third there are the sensors made by AuthenTec these work by using a small R/F field to image the 'true fingerprint' beneath the dead skin layer that is exposed on the surface (I can try to explain this better if anyone cares, but it is kinda counter intuitive and hard to explain). Now I have to admit that in my experience the AuthenTec sensors perform much better than any of the others on the market, of course I may be seen as a bit biased as I have been working with them for one way or another for almost 3 years now... anyway, I would recommend trying to get a sensor setup made with the AuthenTec chip as its core, it should perform better than anything else on the market ATM. To my knowledge the only manufacturer making these available to the end user is Targus (http://www.targus.com/product_details.asp?sku=PA460U ) My only warning is that the software package made by I/O Software, Secure Suite, is not stable… I would not recommend this to anyone; the developers of the software did everything in their power to make the AuthenTec sensors perform just as poorly as the capacitive sensors. However if you find a sensor package that uses Softex’s Omnipass software, all of the new sensor pods that Targus make use this software, I would recommend calling before buying to verify this though, then I think you will be very happy with the systems performance. If anyone has any questions I would be more than happy to try to help answer them. It is the least I can do to give back to all those that have helped answer my questions =).
