Check it out guys. My first PCmod "How-to" article is up. Its a neat trick that is cheap and actually works. Follow the link for the article.Edited by SpeeDj - Had you read the forum guide a bit more closely when you signed on here you would have noticed advertising is a no no, specifically this rule states;

4. We do not permit advertising OF ANY KIND! This includes posting your URL, offering items for sale or trade Or announcements of new sites This applies equally to commercial and private ads. We do permit Senior Members to post their URLs - this is the only exception.

I hope sincerely you will take the time to familiarize yourself with the rules. If you have an article that you feel would be of interest do as the rest of us do and submit it to Joe at the frontpage, if it is deemed of interest it will be posted. Please keep this in mind, and consider this your warning.

Sincerely SpeeDj - Forum Moderator

Is there a noticeable difference with the mod in effect.

yes. I can barely hear any noise even when the hard drive is constantly active.

Edited by SpeeDj, for blatant advertisement. Warning above.

that's a big "Dur, of course" but you do have to be careful of not using too much foam or the drive will suffocate.
I tend to pad and mount my hard drives with heavy rubber bands and cork (or foam if needs be).
The result are great for being cheap ch34p CH34P!

I'm not sure what the original solution was...but hey since we mentioned it, here's how I silenced a 1.2gig drive in an old Dell we had at work. THe bearings were so whiny you could hear it (and it was annoying) like 20 feet away...

It's my awesome harddrive silencer/cooler:

Ingredients:
Open Cell Foam
Bubble Wrap
A bubble wrap lined UPS shipping bag
A 92mm Sunon Fan that was lying around
Tape
Scissors

Cost = 0

It looks hilarious, but was a free solution, and it worked REALLY well. Thing was pretty much silent.

I really would NOT recommend this though. Especially on some drives. Some drives get way too hot on the bottom and could potentially burn the foam! Not to mention the possibility of temp increase.

The open cell foam surrounds the drive, and the fan sits on top...it actually flows decent amounts of air through the foam! (Bot not much to the bottom, which is the hottest part of a harddrive). Probably didn't need it, this 1.2 gig drive never got warm even...but figured "what the heck".

It was in service another 6-8 months before the old dell was replaced and dissasembled (a fun day, I might add). I got points for creativity, but no raise :) :)

It's blatant advertisement, obviously.

Yeah, I've seen offsite links here that have been fine. So most likely that was some sort of advertising or SpeeDj thought it "crossed the line".

I didn't see the link, so I can't quite verify that, but I know if he has a harddrive silencer he made, go ahead and write out the instructions and post a few pics showing what you did in the forums -- thats certainly not a problem, unless of course it says "Only $19.95...Call NOW!" at the end :D

Obvously though, there was more to it than that.

It was a link to an article on a review site he obviously either admins at or writes for. Uncalled for under any circumstances.

I was just trying to show people a trick thought of and wrote an article about to present it. It was completely not ment to advertise. I thought this was just a place for techies to share what they learn in their PC modding adventures. So have no fear about someone with a crappy geocities site threatening your forum traffic.

To those of you who recognized this and posted your hilarious pictures of your packaged drives. Thanks for the feedback. I don't put any foam on the top or bottom of my drives. I fear a catastophic melt-down in my PC.

Thanks for attacking someone attempting to share,
yours truly,
Dark_Halmut

For reference, (I saw the link) you didn't post directly to the article so it was seen as an advertsiement.

Next time link more directly.

small mistake, you are forgiven ;)
