View Full Version : Share Dailup acroos network.
First off here is the setup:
My Rig:
In Sig
Running WinME (hey it works)
Friends Rig:
Athlon SLot A 600
256meg Ram
Win98Se
Both rigs have been connected via a crossover CAT5 cable and netwroks cards. We have setup the TCP/IP settings, and thanks to WinMes networking wizard, we have gotin the comps connected and on thier own litttle network.
Problem, We tried to set up my friends system to share internet with mine, we were asked this in the networking wizard..still no go. The internet will not show up on my system no matter what...My friends system is the one connected to the phoneline, Basicly we had a Small LAN hangout all night playing games like UT and Unreal Gold, 1Nsane....etc...A BLAST!!
Even traded MP3's but I would like to get the internet shared across the network cards..
Can someone please give detailed steps or instructsion on how to get my friend dailup connection shared to my computer?

Its possible..I think. Use a router or a hub with an uplink switch.

If you are sharing it from your friend's computer, then you need to have his computer run a "proxy".
A couple good proxies are:
ICS - Internet Connection Sharing - built into windows
AnalogX's Proxy - a really tiny and easy proxy - www.analogx.com
Then you set up the network with 192.168.0.* IPs, making the proxy machine's IP 192.168.0.1 (unless you use a proxy w/ DHCP support).
We have the IPs addresses setup...
But no proxy SO we are going to try that link...
Hy good news though..Quake 3 is a blast!!!!
Frag tme again...

Dictionary.Com sez:
prox·y
n. pl. prox·ies
-A person authorized to act for another; an agent or substitute.
-The authority to act for another.
-The written authorization to act in place of another.
That is the literal meaning is: if you allow someone to vote on your behalf, they are your proxy.
The computer meaning is that you tell another computer to get the webpage for you, they do so (using their IP address & internet conneciton), and send it to you when they recieve it.
So, many computers can use one computer as a proxy, and that proxy only uses one IP address. This is also a form of NAT (Network Address Translation). NAT is a bit of data sent along with the proxied request, (and is also contained in the reply), so the proxy knows what computer requested the page.

So thats how servers work.

Yeah, the idea is that if you only have one IP address, or a dial-up connection, or don't care to install the DSL software on 100 computers, then there is a proxy solution.
There are small proxies that'll do the job for a household, like
ActiveX's Proxy.. it's very, very easy.
ICS, It's still pretty easy, but it does some configuration changing.
Routed.. (for unix/linux)
And there's ones that are made for huge corporations, like
WinGate
SyGate
Microsoft Proxy
Squid (for unix/linux)
These ones have alot more options, and you can do almost anything with them.
But still, the idea of it all, is that to the ISP, the proxy computer is the only computer connected to the internet. Many people also firewall this machine aswell, because it's your only computer open to attacks from the internet.

But can't you configure it so that the server is just used a very large storage device? You wouldn't need to install an OS on the server then, right?

Your question is confusing.
You need to install an OS on a computer to do anything. Even Overfoldix is an operating system.
To run as a large storage device, all you would do is install an OS & share the hard drives (or the files you want).
You can configure most proxies to keep a very large cache of everything, if that's what your talking about.
A proxy is simply a program that is run on a computer, that "serves" an internet connection. File servers, database servers, Domain Controller Servers etc. are different types of servers, and can be run on almost any computer, if configured correctly.
A "server" is a computer that accepts a "client" request.
A proxy server is a computer that accepts other computer's requests for internet pages, and serves the requested pages to them.
