but now it doesnt,

i have 2 xp computers, networked with a crossover cable, the one computer is a k7s5a using the onboard nic, and the other one has a linksys 10/100 network card, and i had them networked yesterday and today, but suddenly it just doesnt work! after my modem blew from the storm, i put a backup in there, it worked, i took that modem out and stuck it in my moms computer(modem also blew) so she could check her emails, and i stuck it back in mine, and kablam it dont work.....

Try a different PCI slot, also remove all old modem drivers before you put it back in.

LOL it works now, i tried to push the plug in before and no luck, i unplugged it and pluged it back in and guess what... it works.. thats really weird, i never touched it before either!
