View Full Version : Win2K locks under Radeon8500/direct3D
When I try to use games like AVP: Gold, or when I try to use the DirectX direct3D test, my computer puts the monitor on standby and locks the computer, not even my keyboard lights work.
I'm using;
Via drivers: 4.38
ATI drivers: w2k-radeon-5-13-01-6071-efg
I also have the Win2K compatability patch installed, no good though. Help would greatly be appreciated.
it can be some of the agp settings or even drivers. you have to test them all in order to diagnose the problem.
start at the agp interface (4x/2x) and stuff like fast writes and sideband addressing if you have both available in the mainboard bios.
set frequencies and buses to the stock if system is overclocked and check temperatures. you can try running the default settings in bios too.

Welcome to the club :). You just experienced the Infinite Loop Error. Mess around with every setting that has to do with your video card. For mine to work, I had to run the AGP Bus at 100Mhz. Before that, I tried diasbling AGP Texture Acceleration in DirectX Diagnostics. Either one worked. Good luck
also I believe there are new drivers out for the radeon, version 6094. setting the bios to defaults, as ottO said, sounds like a good idea. I have seen people say that disabling fast writes in the bios has cleared up problems with radeons.
If that doesnt help try reinstalling directX (if you dont have directX 8.1 get it, if you do have it then try reinstalling). DirectX Eradicator (http://www.majorgeeks.com/article.php?sid=509) will get rid of directx, then dowload and install 8.1 again.
My motherboard supports fast writes but according to wcpuid my radeon 8500dv doesnt, does anybody know if the radeons do support fast writes? i thought it was only nvidia cards but i have seen people say that the radeon supports it as well, any idea?

ppl use to edit the video card bios and to enable the fast writes then they flash the new bios to the card. so the support seems to be about the bios. thats how it works in the nvidia video cards, perhaps ati either?
not only fast writes but the bioses have also the support for sideband addressing.
