Yet if i cut the parallel wire (green) then the led shows, but no fan power... help! Do i need to put the negative LED straight to the 12v negative (black)?

Nope, putting that green LED to the negative is even weirder. It works, but both lights come on when i go into the 7v mode!

Wire it like this.
I've omitted the resistors in this diagram for clarity. The side of the LED with the thick black line represents its ground wire.
When the switch is to the right, the fan runs at 12V. Both wires going to the red LED are grounded, and the light doesn't come on. The high wire of the green LED is always at 5V, and now its low wire is grounded and the light comes on.
When the switch is to the left, the fan runs at 7V. Both wires going to the green LED are at 5V and the light doesn't come on. The low wire of the red LED is always grounded and now its high wire is at 5V and the light comes on.

That hasnt answered my question... Youve gone and added a 5v line which I will never use.

You're welcome.
