View Full Version : Case Lighting :: White or Clear?

More Case Lighting questions. Why must these decisions be so hard!!
I have my window installed, I used a green tinted sheet of plexiglass and I want to light up the insides of my case. I want to use a cold cathode tube or some other form of cool lighting. (by cool I mean not creating alot of heat) Should I use a white light? Or should I get a clear light? I don't want to put blue or red or green in there cause that would just look funky with green plexi in front of it. Any help and links would be appreciated, I will post the final product when it is complete. Thanks :burn:

If by "clear" you mean completely transparent, and by "white" you mean opaque, then your only option is opaque. All CCFL's and neon lights are opaque white as far as I know, however the varying casses inside them dictate the colors they produce.
I was unaware that white light CCFL's were made. If you can find one, then sure, go for it. Otherwise, just use a green CCFL or neon, the window will make it a deeper green than the light alone, but it should still look just fine.

Someone, just give me an address to a place where I can buy it. . I don't need a life story of lighting :) Point is I don't want a colored light, roughly 6 to 8 inches long with either a fanheader or molex power connector on the end.
THANKS FOR ANY HELP,
Cody

Perhaps if you had actually ASKED where to get them, I would have told you.
Like I said, as far as I know, they don't make "white" CCFL's or neons. Just colors and UV. You can get CCFL's all over the place. The first place that comes to mind is www.pcmods.com but they are available at a thousand other places. Try a websearch, or if you want to stop being impatient, you can wait for someone to post some more sites in this thread.

Umm... if the light was actually clear, there wouldn't be any light.. whether you get a clear light, or a white light, the color of the actual light emitting from the fixture is going to be the same color... right??

Any standard light omitting like a light bulb or tube or what have you. . with a colored "lens" in front of it will take on that color.

No, all CCFL's and neons are the same color on the outside. The composition of the gasses inside the light tube is what determins the color the light will produce when charged with electricity. Of course, if you put a colored lens in front of a light, it will influence the original color, but the color of the original light will still be prominent.
Krott buddy, you need to take a look-see at this (http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=58341) thread. ;)

Über~PhLuBB Ever consider not raggin' on everyone about every tiny detail.. This started as a simple question about lighting and I already found my answer. No need to rag posts in my threads.

There are rules in this forum. It is the duty of all members to help uphold those rules. His signature is blatantly over the limit, I kindly pointed him to the thread where he can read about the rules, it's as simple as that.
If you were referencing the light, what I did was correct his understanding of an encapsulated gas light producing mechanism. There's no sense of him or anyone else going around spouting incorrect information.
Capice? =)

Let's all just relax, no reason to get bent out of shape about any point in this thread, and yes that sig does not conform to the rules. But this has been noted in almost every thread I have seen him post in, anyone considered kindly PM'ing him and asking him to adhere.
*sigh* Keep it civil guys

Actually, I normally do that. I've sent out like 15 so far, but I already had a post typed up and didn't want to go to the trouble of PMing. I'll PM in the future though.

If you want to go for chep I recommend a gaggle of white LEDs. Low heat and you could position them all over the place.
Allelectronics.com (or radios shack) will have White LEDs comparably cheap. Just add a 470ohm resistor and wire the LEDS in series.

I already found what I was looking for on line. Sidewinder computers has a great Cathode kit available for around 28 and change (shipping included) Check it out sometimes.
