Got everything but the MGDMFD part.
you should definately call your ISP and ask about this, this is totally weird. The first thing that I thought of is pretty silly, but it's happened-
Somebody's shift ends at 7pm, and they are turning off the DNS server or something by accident as they go:D
ISP = GDMFPITA ;)

could be several things on the ISP side. If there are a lot of banks or computer busnesses then it might sap the bandwidth when they do daily backups on thrir computers.

lots of companies transfer the daily reciepts and daily business transactions at night. If you have a lot of these corperations around you then this could be the problem as they flood the t- 1's and network backbone they take away bandwidth and magnify any weaknesses in your connection. If one makes a big deal about it then something can be done.

Wow. Never before have I experienced this level of support!!:) They said what might be wrong is under Tools>Ineternet Options>Connections>LAN Settings, nothing should be checked. But of course, "Automatically Detect Settings" was checked. Also under connections, there are radio buttons for proxy or something, "Never dial a connection" should have have been selected, but, of course, "Dial if a network connection is not detected" is selected. D'oh!!!!!!!!!! Thanx for the advice, I'll see what happens later,:D :D

Does the dsl light blink or go out on the modem when you lose service. If you lose service again call back. If they won't do anything about it become a regular caller soon they will get the message. Be nice and polite about it but keep at them. If you don't lose the dsl light on the modem and can connect and are unable to recieve any pages check for packet loss by doing what are called extended pings. go to a dos promt type ping -l 512 yahoo.com -n 200 if you lose more then 30 - 40 % of the packets you have packet loss type ping -l 1024 yahoo.com -n 200 if you lose more then 40 - 50 % of these packets you have packet loss. Get the dns servers from your ISP and check that you are recieving them from their server.

Im going to give you a few tips and feel free to hit me up with an email at 93vtec@bellsouth.net if this dosent solve your problem. I work for bellsouth DSL and I can tell you how to get them to fix the problem ;) First....are you pulling an ip address or is it authentication problems? If you can pull an ip try to ping out by dns and ip from a dos prompt. If you cant ping out try unhooking all the phone in your house and leave just your modem plugged in. If you still have the problems its likely coming from emi/rmi. Look for things like halogen or flourescent lamps within 10 feet of the modem. Also move things like portable 900mhz phones or ups' away from the modem. Try those things and email me with the results....I rarely check forums so I probably wont see your responses if you post here.
Good luck!

from the dos prompt just type "ping yahoo.com" If you get replies on that increase the packet size until it begins to timeout. If it starts timing out with bigger packets you may have a bandwidth problem. Contact your isp if that is so. If you are unable to ping.....write your ip address down and go to someone elses computer(yea....its a pain but ISP's are often too lazy to do half this stuff) and run a traceroute from visualroute.visualware.com Enter in your ip and run a visual route and see if it will get through to your computer. If you see packet loss on the last hop(between your ISP and your ip) check for emi/rmi as I mentioned in my previous post. If your ISP is being a b**** about helping you, unplug your modem and call them and tell them you dont have sync at the modem. With a no sync issue they should contact the line techs(DSG in the southeast) and they will run line tests etc. That is one way of forcing your ISP's hand. Umm...Im tired of typing now so good luck.

timeing out is bad. check for interference as I mentioned previously and if after doing that you still have no luck try running the traceroute from somewhere else and seeing what it comes up with....If you still have no luck after removing all the interference call your ISP and see if they will call the line techs. If they dont call the line techs unhook your modem as I mentioed before and force them to call the line techs ;)

Well, OK. Pinged Yahoo! before I posted last and it timed out about a dozen times for returning a 12% loss with 512, and about a dozen and a half times(timed out), getting 10% loss with 1024; BTW I have a dynamic IP address,(wouldn't I?). Support is great, too,:D. "190,000 people, working for you.", huh, IHateStupidPPL?:D

I can almost guarantee its related to interference. More than likely its going to be on your end. Most likely something like lights in the room(halogen/flourescent) or even something wierd like something on the other side of the wall(yes, it happens). If its not on your end its going to most likely be something that turns on at around 7pm outside(street lights use high pressure sodium bulbs....big interfernce....also could be something like outside lights that are on a timer close to your nid, where the telephone lines come into the house). As a last resort go buy yourself about 100ft of cat5(or cat3 if your on a budget) and run what is called a homerun. It involves installing a filter on the outside of the hosue that splits voice and data into two seperate pairs. You run the cat5 directly to the computer from the data pair. Oh yea, if you have a long phone cord going from the wall to the modem(as in over 10ft) go to something shorter or pick up DSL phone cord from best buy(it has better insulation than normal phone cords)

Those 2 big round steel cases on the top of power lines that hum.:D Anyway, wouldn't I have realized this interference/slow down with dial-up, or no?
IHateStupidPPL
06-24-02, 11:13 PM
DSL operates on a much higher frequency than analog. Different devices emit different interference on different frequencies. The transformers would more than likely cause a problem all the time....not just at night. Look for things that are only on at night.

A Street light about 50 yds. away?
IHateStupidPPL
06-24-02, 11:41 PM
50yd away from the modem or NID(where the lines come into your house)? Also are your lines run underground(if so your lucky...my folks have underground cabeling and were getting sync with 2 unfiltered phones.....) Honestly, its more likely inside, turn off everything(and unplug everything) other than the modem and the computer. Get all the phones off the line(make sure you dialup is filtered btw...im assuming thats what you are using now) and turn off all the lights. See if you can surf then.

Call your ISP and make them run some tests. If you dont get a resolution from them run that homerun wiring I mentioned earlier. If you have a homerun it will eliminate any issues on your end and force them to fix the problem. If all else fails....get cable. I love my cable connection.....6 months.....never dropped once, took 15 minutes to hook it up and get surfing.

Your getting packet loss during the day now as well? Run the homerun wiring and if still no luck call your ISP and rip them a new one ;)
edit: If you are getting the packet loss during the day your ISP should be able to send someone out and have them connect at the NID and find out if they are getting packet loss there as well. If you are really ambitious.....and you have a laptop....take the computer and modem outside and connect with the modem hooked up outside(modem should be able to plug into the NID). See if you have the same problems, if you do....make your ISP fix it ;)
