I just set up my friend's computer. He bought a Duron 850 long ago but a guy who set it up for him the first time killed his mobo. Anyways, temps are frightening. 59C idle in MBM5, reads 70C idle in BIOS. Here's his setup:

Gigabyte GA7ZX-E
Duron 850
Chrome Orb

His board has a thermosister so I'm not sure if he's getting the correct readings. MBM reports different than his BIOS. When I touch the orb, it's barely luke warm. I'm not even sure that his MBM readings are correct.

Anyways, I'm sure that chrome orb should suffice since my client rig is the same and temps are in the mid 30's. His room however is hot though, since his case temp is around 35c.

Anything I can do to bring those temps down. A better cooler would help though.

does he have any case fans?? doesn't seem like he is
getting good air flow as his case temps 100F !!!

get him to run with the case dooes off and a table fan if you
have one blowing into the PC until he can get some better
cooling or more fans.

did he use any thermal paste??

Yeah he's using his IBM case (remarkly fits other mobo's) for his computer. Case shell is off and all. I also told him to put his power supply on top of the tower instead, as it blocks off his heatsink. I put ASIII onto that core. We put a table fan against it and the case temps went down to around 28-29c. Only shaved 2c off the cpu though. He does not have any case fans.

Ensure that the hsf is on correctly and not turned around. Don't take this the wrong way, it happens to thebest of us sometimes

Try a better heatsink. Orbs are aweful. Even though it should be sufficient for this... If you have an old stock heatsink lying around, give it a shot.

The orb can only go one way. I went 180 with it, but the base of the orb isn't centered on the core.

He also has a Coolermaster heatsink. I would've used that but it has one of those "thin" fans installed. I'd be surprised if that performed better than the orb.

Try it. What do you have to lose?
