I also have a Linksys 4-port router. I have not had any problems with it at all and it passes all of the port scans I have tried so far.

Two friends of mine have the Linksys and they are working out great for them. On the other hand I am to cheap to spend money on a product that I can set up with an old PC for free. I used an old P2-450 Xeon(got it for free) running Free BSD to route my cable modem.....cost $0

i have a dlink and its fine

i dont think brand really matters as long as it has a built in switch, firewall, etc., and 4 or more ports

So choose the cheapest one

I personnaly like my Dlink. And it was cheap! I got it for a Xmas gift. :p But I think the Dlink would actually be cheaper than the linksys.

The linksys routers are by far the most popular with my SOHO clients (I don't know why--I think because of all the advertising and sales they have on them). They work just fine and have all the features necessary for a home network.

I use the D-Link 704P that does everything the linksys does AND it has a parallel port so it can act as a print server without having a separate computer set up to be on all the time acting as such. It also sports a serial port that can be connected to an external modem so that if your broadband should fail, it will automatically dial out and you can have (at least) shared dial-up access.

I also got it on sale for around $40 after rebate. THEN Best Buy had them on sale for $30 after rebate two weeks after I got mine.

I'm looking around for a firmware hack that will allow me to use the serial port as a FAX SERVER. Fixing the firmware wouldn't be a big deal, but creating the driver for the O/S would be more than I'd like to bite off. Maybe some other ambitious programmer has already done it...

the all do the same thing, it just matters which one has the features you need.

Linksys basic firewall/router...
Dlink basic firewall/router with printserver...
SMC basic firewall/router with printserver... Print server works with Linux, also has a com port to share ISDN or Dialup as a backup if your DSL/Cable dies...

What do you need...
