Sadly, my 80gig maxtor 5400 ata/100 is reaching the end of it's life. The click-click-click of the heads, and the supreme slowness are leading to one inevitable possability... Death.

It's not all bad though, gives me an excuse to upgrade :). Ive had a promise ata/100 controller ive been meaning to mod to raid, and now's the best time, i need a new HD anyway!. I'm thinking of a pair of IBM 120Gxp 7200rpm 40gig ata/100 drives in a raid striping array.

What do you guys think? I want some fairly fast IDE drives that will also last me more than a few years (Like my stupid maxtor). Are these IBM drives up to the task? I know that the 60gxp and 75gxp had a lot of problems but I hear the 120s are pretty good drives.

Input appreciated.

I have a 40GB 60GXP drive and it works fine. I have had it for about 8 months with no problems.

It is fast and pretty quiet, but it does run rather hot.

I think you would be happy with the IBM setup if you get it, just make sure to keep them cool.

That's good, because I found them for $120Canadian.

Looks like il need to invest in some cooling too :O

120GXP rocks, very fast and very quiet
Forget what people say about IBM hard drives, its because of the problems of the 60gxp and 75gxp lines, i've not seen one complaint from a user of a 120gxp

yeah, the 120gxp's are nice, as good as any out there (except maybe the western digital special editions). I have not heard anything but good about them
