hello everyone,

I need some help here,

I have one Radeon 8500 ATI original retail 275/275.

It runs damn hot since the beginning.

I think it's due to the tiny heatsink and fan(stock ones)

And later i think the fan was damaged by the heat, it seems run slower than before. And the card runs even hotter, really hot even when checking email.

And the amount of onchip RAM on the video card detected by the 3Dmark2001SE and PCmark2002 is changing!!!!!!!!!!!!

Isn't it should be 64MB?

It had become 56MB,
then later it became 24MB which it can detect now,

see the picture

I am not sure if it's because the memory on the video card is damaged one by one, or it's the problem of 3dmark2001SE and PCmark2002?

(NOTE: this Radeon 8500 has ran on one of my old system, and before i switch it to my new rig, it has already read as "56MB" by 3dmark2001SE and PCmark2002.

And after i switch it to the new rig, same reading.

And now it's 24MB, you can see below

I want some answers please!!

You have nothing to worry about as the 24mb of ram indicates the amount of your system ram allocated to your video card in Direct3d....if you look above it says 64mb local ram and that is correct....as for cooling, a good 486/PI heatsink and some radio Shack ramsinks should do the trick if you use Artic Alumina adhesive to attach them

Are you sure?

Because......it seems the card getting worst in games(maybe my imagination)

But i am sure the first time i tried CS 1.5, in 1600X1200, that Radeon 8500 could handle 3 smoke genades still with 100fps.

And now, it seems in 1024X768, when i walk into ONE smoke genade, the fps went down to 70 something.

Are you sure the onboard memory isn't damaged? Please tell me this-----i want to hear this------------if any memory is damaged, the entire card won't work.
I wish to hear that because this will determind my card is totally ok.

But for that fps in cs thing, what happened?
Do you think that's caused by the heat? If it's not because it's losing memory?

Question 2:

I was thinking about to switch the heatsink and fan a while ago. BUT, how do i take the stock ones off without damage the card?? Details please! Thanks!

That's one.

2. I have one heatsink + fan from one of my old CPU which look much better than the ones on the card, i want to use them. As you said that "Artic Alumina adhesive", where can i get that?
Could you please show me a link to that product?

thanks a lot

Absolutely positive, and yes, if one ram chip was damaged there would be little chance of the card functioning at all...

try running 3dmark and seeing what happens, also you should use the new catalyst drivers these are supposed to be real good...

as for the heatsink removal either get up the card real hot (gaming) or real cold (freezer in antistatic bag) and pry it off gently using a screwdriver with a credit card underneath to protect the pcb...

do you mean i still need to pry off the heatsink by force?

How did the manufacturer put it on? use the same thing similar to that "Artic Alumina adhesive"?

And is this what i need to install a new heatsink?
