View Full Version : Does Pump Location Matter?
I am going to be building a Water Cooling case with Copper tubing, and minimal Tygon tubing. My current case only has enough room to mount the Pump above the Power Supply. Is the pump being above the radiator and WB going to be a problem?

posible might cuase an air trap problem which wouldnt be good for a pump , but this would help flow rate to the block
is this a submersible pump , or inline ?

shouldnt be a problem at all, unlesss it leaks on your psu for some odd reason...

i've seen lots of systems with the header at the bottom?
how do you fill these to get air out
surly the header has to be at the top?

Its Going to be an inline Pump. Either an Eheim 1048 or the CPUfx Magdrive Pump. (The CPUfx is a 12v Pump that runs off the PSU)
Also can you mount these pumps on their side?

DONT EVER ORDER FROM CPUFX! get a maxijet or via aqua for 25bucks
Do the Via or MaxiJet run of the PSU (12v)?

Nope.
Does anyone use a Solid State Relay to control their Pump? If so how much do they cost, which works best, and where do I get one?

Why do people always care if it runs off 12v or not, get a 110vac(or 240v in some places) pump and that way your not taking any power away from your pc. If you are worried about not turning on the pump when you turn on you pc, rig up a relay to turn on the pump and your set.
Hope this helps you with your purchase
Isn't that what I just said? I asked where and how much a Relay costs?
To answer your question, Some people like to have a completely contained water cooling system. A 12v pump is convienent because you don't have to rig a relay or any extra wireing, and you don't have to drill a hole in your case to get the power cord out.
Also, If you have a 530w PSU, a 12v @ 1.2a pump is nothing.

your post about the relay was written when i was writting mine, just great timming:D.
As for a relay not quite sure what would be ideal, just make sure its rated for atleast double of what your going to draw. And instead of drilling a hole in the back of the case, like so many modders do, why dont you drill a small hole in you psu and get the 110v from there, but if your sure you have lots of power I cant see a reason why not use the pc's psu to power the pump.
hope this clears some things up:)
What should be double, the 12v or the 110v?

i have a relay, the radioshack one, and it works great for when i did use it, i mite use it again as ill have all my wc stuff in a case, but you should just leave your pump running all the time maby...
but stay away from 12v pumps, and stay away from CPUFX
i think dodgeviper has some 12v solid state relays for sale, but they mite be all sold out, try bgmicro.com
The thing that should be double, is the amp rating of the relay. The reason for this, is that everything that "starts up" in some way (motors and such) draw more amp at startup then when running.
Get a 12V/220V (or 12V/110V) relay wired to the 12V line. If you are creative, then make it all neat and inside your PSU, taking 220V (or 110V) from the input to the PSU and the 12V right from the PSU board. Then make a connector in the PSU housing giving you an internal 220V (or 110V!) connector!
sorted!

Go down to radio shack.. buy an 120v illuminated rocker switch.. cut your pump line.. and connect the switch...
BAM! You are done.. You will never forget to put your pump on.. and if you do.. you are just plain stupid.. or intoxicated :). Just keep the switch in site.. I set mine on the top of my case..
I use a Via Aqua 1300.. works awesome..
If you are going to go inline and have the pump at the top of the system.. above everything else.. you are going to have an air problem.
How are you going to fill the system?
You will need to put in some sort of bleed system.. won't be that hard to devise something.

the relay i got is rated for 10amps on 120v, and my pump is like 20watts so thats.... like 1/6 of an amp aprox, so i shouldnt have a problem, another thing i thought of doing is getting a DPDT switch and switching the pump hot wire and the atx on switch wire, so the pump must be on to press the button....
