View Full Version : hmmmm.. buying a hard drive...
I'm looking for a new hd, mine seems about to bite the bullet. It is clicking away, and the seek time has become about 4x slower. I was wondering, what would be the best hard drive to get in the $60-100 range. I looking to overclock, so overclockability is important, but stability, and not having to send it back five or six times is also important. Thanks for any help.

That depends mostly on what size of drive you want? In that price range you can get a lot of drives, mostly all 40GB ones, my suggestion would be to go for a Maxtor D740X or a Seagate Barracuda IV (spelling)
Different people having different luck will give you suggestions according to the luck they were getting with their HDDs, I personally don't trust WD in any way, it could be that their newer drives are better, but from my expirience they plainly suck in reliability. I went with maxtor, its still new, and I'm just hoping for the best, but its a really fast drive, so it would be my 1st recommendation

I've about had most all makes at one time or another. At any given time one manufacturer is usually better than another. Currently, and for what I'd say is the last year or so, I've seen the best results from the Maxtors. Seagates may be pretty good, now, from what I've read, but after some bad experiences with them several years ago, I can't bring myself to buy them again. In the last 3 years I've purchased about 10 Maxtors without a single failure yet. Funny thing is, about 4 years ago I wouldn't have had a Maxtor. I'm running the D740X 40 gig Maxtors that I found for 70 bux each.
Cheers,

Those prices for the 80 gig seem low, that's 5200rpm not 7200rpm right?

I dumped my IBM's and switched to Seagate....
Those Barracuda IV's are the quiestest drives (both idle and access) I have ever owned....(Newegg, OEM, ...hint, hint)
I will look hard at the new Barracuda V's when they come out....Might actually go RAID at that point...

Thanks, I'm gonna buy one of those 7200rpm maxtors, mine is just about dead. Thanks again

I have stopped using pricewatch.com because so many of the vendors on there are not very good and it is easier to look at newegg.com and just buy whatever they have.
I also am going to try comparing their prices with pcnut.com (which is one of our sponsers) to support the forum.

Worthwhile to go to www.resellerratings.com and read the ratings of specific vendors. And even leave comments on the vendors you have used.

I use Pricewatch as a guage for OEM stuff...
Then I head over to Newegg or Googlegearand see how they compare....
Usually within a few $$ and with Newegg's/Googlgear's service....that is ok with me..
