I was thinking of buying a new computer. Because my budget is very tight, I though of buying a slower processor and overclocking it. I read a lot of posts and guides but I am still confused about some little things about overckocking. First of all, is it easier to overclock a P4 of an AMD XP? I'd have an Asus P4S533 motherboard with a 1,8 P4 if, of course, I go with P4, and a Soltek 75DRV-5 Via kt333 if I go for AMD. Are those motherboards overclockable? Is there better motherboars in this price range? Can I overclock them by changing the FSB in the BIOS?
I read that you need to ''unlock'' and AMD xp CPU to overclock. What does that mean? (heh sorry I'm new to overclocking)

For the cooling, is a Volcano7+ enough if I want to overclock by about 300-400MgHz? Do I need a second fan?

Oh and I saw some people mentioning some kind of AGOGA or AGOIA codes for AMD CPUs. What does that mean? Does it man it's more overclockable or it's a special kind of card?

Thanks

my best advice is to buy the P4 1.6a. I think it's got the best bang for the buck right now. It should overclock to somewhere around 2.2-2.4 GHz. Get a good motherboard like the abit TH7-II (see the intel section for more info on this...).

If you go AMD, the XP1600+ is a great chip. I've got 2 running over 1.8 GHz. They are fast. You might wait a couple of weeks and see how the TBreds overclock, but they'll likely stay above $200 until they come out in lower speeds.

But overall I'd recommend the intel setup right now.

Dude says he's on a tight budget so I don't think there's any question, get an AMD chip. If you're a REAL newbie lemme tell you that an XP chip has 9 operations per cycle while Intel has 6, so a lower MHz AMD chip can easily keep up with a higher MHz Intel. There's other factors but just keep in mind that on average an XP can do what a P4 can 200-400 MHz higher if not more.

AMD equals super fast computer for cheap(er).

Intel equals barely-super faster computer for tall cash.

If you are on a tight budjet, may I recommend you buy a second hand 1gig 266 T-Bird with a good stepping that already has been overclocked. Lots of those chips are very hot and can overclock to like 1.5gigs with ease. I must say, alot of these chips are to brag, I could barely tell any difference going from 1gig to 1.7gigs.
