Hi,
Im a newbie building his first system with some questions about case fans. I'm going to be overclockinga 1.6 to hopefully around 2.4 levels. I plan on using artic silver with the reatil heat sink and fan.
But for case fans:
1. how many do you need? is somewhere from 2-4 enough?
2. what differentiates between an intake and exhaust fan? Is there actual difference when you buy the fan? or when/how you mount it?
3. 3pin and 4 pin fans? Are the pins just about you connect to the power supply? if so, is one preferred?
Thanks for all of your help guys.

First the only difference in intake and exhaust fans is the way you point the fan.
Second, if you buy fans get 4 pin because you do not want to run too much off you motherboard.
Third, we would need to know what kind of case you have in order to tell you what and how many you need.
Also, if you are wanting to get 2.4 with a 1.6 you may want to consider another heatsink and fan. The stock will probally give you enough cooling but you could get better. Go to KD computers online and look at the Thermalright AX478. Also go to www.nexfan.com. They have 80mm 30CFM fans for 1 dollar already wired with a 4pin connector.

First off, if your new to overclocking, dont get your hopes too high.
I doubt you'll ever come close to 2.4 Ghz (Im assuming your talking about a 1.6A northwood).
Do some reading in the forums and read the cover guides on the page...then after alot of misconceptions are cleared you'll be ready to start overclocking.

Ok. I would be hapy with anything less than 2.4 also. I'm just saying that if i did hit 2.4, i would stop there.
as for teh case, i'll take any recommendations on that also. I would prefer something mid tower size though, because I cant fit a tower on my desk at school. But, if it has to be a tower cuz of airflow, I'll understand.

check these out. They come with fans and have more than enough room for most everything you need. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=281&manufactory=1502&DEPA=1

i got 4 fans, 3 taking air out (2 in the back, and one at the top) and 1 on the left side of the case panel which blows are in, even with all those fan, my system temp is pretty high, around 30c most of the time, and i always have my room ac on, so i was expecting better.. maybe my airflow is all messed up?

Here is a little hint, no matter what kind of pressure you want be it possitive(more comming in than going out) or negative(more comming out than in) you do not want an excess of one. Meaning if you have 3 out and 1 in(assuming they are equal or close in CFM) you have 3 times as much going out than in. Meaning not enough good cool air is getting in your system. My suggestion would be to add another intake to the 4 fans you have(making it 5 fans). I think you will see a much better improvement.
I have 210CFM of intake and 170CFM of exhaust in my system and my case temps are within in 1C of my room temps.

hmm, i ran out of spare fans..
so should i take one of the back fan and put it on the chassis? (making it 2 in and 2 out) forgat 2 mention, i also have a hhd cooler which is just a little aluminum plate with 2 small fans blowing air out, not sure if it helps since i dont have any hdd temp sensors..

Go buy you a good 60+CFM 90mm to 120mm fan and use that. Keep the fans you have the way they are and get more comming in.
Yea definitely check out the deals at Newegg. They have very cheap Chieftec cases (Some are modded) which are cheap 40-60.00 + 20ish dollar shipping, which is good for a full tower! It has plenty of room for you to mod blowholes, intake holes in, and also lots of room on the inside.
