View Full Version : ...And I don't even smoke!

I stuck a cigarette lighter into the back of my case. The main reason is for easy access to 12V power outside the case. That way I could get a cheap 12V fan and set it on my desk to keep my head cool. :p

Closer view. The switch lets me turn on the upper PSU even when the computer is shut off. Since the lighting is hooked to that PSU, I can use the neon tubes to see what I'm doing when installing new hardware. I also added an AT-style power pass-through connector to that power supply. It's always on instead of being controlled by a relay.

very cool! You could plug a cellphone into that, too!

Believe it or not, the reason I put that in was so I could plug in a 12V air pump when working on my bike in my room.

Uh . . . that's interesting, to say the least. :)

yr casoign is hell of a big. is that casing for servers?

Crazy Jayhawk

It could be used for servers, but I like it because it has lots of room for all the stuff I put inside. All that space and it's still a mess inside. :p

Plus, it looks more imposing this way. http://s.drunkencell.com/vampire.gif

Could you take a pic of how you wired it up? And maybe a tiny article so I could understand it? Thanks

aww heak. mines taller than that. 25" to be exact. i was thinking of building a HUGE 24"x24" cube to house a watercooled 16 node beowulf cluster using 5.25 EBX mobos. only the boards alone are $600+ without the S370 procs and PSUs. that would be pretty cool to say you have your own beowulf though.

Nice job ! (to say the least :p )

Actually, the wiring is so simple that I may be able to do this without a diagram.

Parts required:
1 cigarette lighter well (available at auto parts stores)
1 female molex connector
2 Female disconnects, also called spade connectors. (available at a hardware store)

Step one: Figure out where you're going to put the lighter. Drill a 3/4" diameter hole for it. The well is in two sections. Unscrew the outer section and place it on the back side of the panel. Slide the inner section through the hole and thread the two sections back together.

Step two: Get your 12V power. I'd recommend finding a power lead that only has one molex connector on it so that the only thing drawing power through those wires is the lighter. Set that lead aside for the moment.

Step three: Wire up the connector that will hook the lighter up to the power supply. If you want, you can remove the 5V and one of the ground connectors since you won't be using them. Strip about 3/8" of the insulation from the ends of the wires and crimp the spade connectors onto them.

Step four: Connect the adapter to the lighter. The outer terminal of the lighter is ground and the center is 12V. Connect the spade terminals appropriately. The ground connection can be omitted since the ground contacts the case and the case is grounded, but I like to add it just to be sure. Then connect the adapter to the molex connector.

That's all there is. If you still want illustrations, I'll see what I can whip up in MSPaint. :p

one suggestion to clean things up. i am not sure where to get them but alot of newer cars have covers for cig lighters that they put for appliences that just fit over the hole (my dads 2001 dodge van has one perhaps you could cruise some junk yards for one) just an idea.

How about the instructions for triggering the power supply with the switch? That (to me) would be slightly more useful (lights). :D

Thanks!

And in keeping with the automotive theme, I've now installed a car ignition switch for turning on the computer, just like the old system had.

your going to have to post how you did the ignition, do they work like regular on/off switches, and finally can those be pick up at a auto store (I'm gussing yes).

That is very very very very very cool. Now you just need to think of a way to have an engine noise in the background when you put the key in.

I bought my switch at Napa Auto Parts. Make sure you get a switch that has a "Start" position. Connect the two wires of the power switch to the BAT and START terminals. Turn the key all the way to the start position and let go. It'll spring back, thus working like a momentary contact switch.

hey you could run a second PSU for lights and stuff to the run position terminal and it would come on before the computer. than all you need to do is set the leds up like indicator(backlit with writing) and one of those PC tachs.

woah that is SO cool, that's a good theme for a computer... plus added security as only the key can start the computer....

Actually, it's not all that unique. I see many people with these at LAN parties.

Okay.

Your telling me this isnt unique.

Car Ignition starter to start your PC.

And a Lighter type thing on the BACK Of your PC.

Hmmmm....

Seem's unique to me.

I cut a hole in the front panel large enough to fit the front part of the switch and connected the two terminals of the power switch to the BAT and START terminals of the ignition switch. I cut a hole in the back side of the case and connected the two terminals of the lighter to 12 volts and ground.

You can't get the switch at Radio shack, but you can get one from almost any auto parts store.

Unique - Adj. - Being the only one of its kind.

Like I said, i've seen multiples of these at LAN parties. I'm not knocking the mod, it's useful (I suppose), but it's not "unique".

I was gonna mod a lighter in my friend's case, but I figured it would draw too much power. I guess I was wrong.
