View Full Version : Comp without case :(

I decided to take all my parts out of my case and run it on my desk. I figured it would result in better temps because the heat wouldn't be swirling around the heatsink or anything. But actually from what I can tell my temps have gone up more than 4c!! This makes me an unhappy camper. Right now my temp probe is reading just over 50c and has been steadily going up. :( MBM says 41c and my probe says 50c. Which is right and should I put my comp back in my case?? On the plus side is my comp is much quiter now that I don't have all those case fans.

Hmm, that's weird, I always though taking the hardware out would make the PC cooler. How long have you been testing this? Perhaps your room just got hotter?

it is running hotter because it doesn't have all thoose fans that are in your case cooling the parts

cases along with fans, help to direct airflow, on and away from various parts of your computer, if you have it set up right, i think this might be the reason you got a spike in temps

Well, after playing around a little, I found a solution that helped bring my temps down about 3c. I put a 120mm duct on top of the fan on the HS and set a 120mm fan on top of that. It looks kinda funny but it seems to work. I think I want to find a more sturdy solution though. A small bump and the duct and fan come crashing down.

EDIT: Oh, my probe now reads 47.7 and MBM reads 39c. Why does MBM read it so low?

EDIT: Now that I shut it down my temps have change even more for the better. MBM (hahaha ;)) sats 36c and my probe touching the side of the core says 44c. YAY! My temps are now a little bit better than when I had the case! w00t! :D

have it on front of the window on the table, that's how i got my main rig..
(cases eat c***, and i'm too lazy to make myself a proper case, a desktop atx one, few rackservers i built at my countrys service had a sweeter, kinda like desktop, heaps of space and 6 5.25" bays(+1 floppy bay).

if you have it on a place with absolotely no airflow your going to be screwed, but having even just one small/non-noisy fan around it helps a lot(tho i don't have a fan on, the airflow to/from the window is enough to keep the air between cards near ambient).

hd's tend to make noise tho.. but it doesn't matter since i've learnt to sleep with the computer on for the past 6 years..

Now my computer seems to lockup fairly regularly with my computer outside the case. It never locked up before at the settings I have it at. :(

I agree with KeyboardCowboy. When I remove my side cover, my temps go up by 3 deg. The only explanation that I can see is that the case fans help in removing heat from the mobo area, which in turn helps the cpu run cooler. I am only runnin a 60mm fan and the psu fan on mu case and both are pulling, so it doesnt take allot of air to cool a couple deg, it just needs airflow...

Well, I put all the stuff back in my case. My CPU temps went up about 4c. :( The strange thing is my probe reads 48c and MBM reads 38c. There never used to be a 10c difference between the 2.:eh?:

Well, I don't believe my probe anymore. WHen it read 50c I decided to touch the base of my HS. I didn't even feel warm. And at 50c it would feel REALLY warm to the touch. I am more inclined to believe MBM now. I think it seems more accurate.

Put these parts into freezer.

That will help

Im having the sme problem........ im running 42c with no case, when i was at 36 with a case ( mines being painted............) the airflow is offset probably-

why would you want a puter without a case?

I ran my computer out of a case for a week, since I had my case custom done. If you have A/C and everything, your 'case' temps stay nice and cool, because your components cannot sufficate inside of a case.

Of course a case with a lot of airflow (120mm intakes, outakes, and blowholes) may even yield better temps.

it sucks to be taking the mobo out and putting it back in few time's per week.. or be reaching insides to switch some jumpers.

My only thought for the day,
By taking it out of the case you have stopped the airflow around the probe, so it is now not being cooled by a fan, so it could ( repeat COULD ) be just the probe giving a false reading.

Airflow in general cools things down. When your sitting in your car, windows down, no AC, your baking, and then when even the slightest breeze goes through, it cools you down. Same with a computer in the case. If it has no airflow, the heat just sits there and bakes everything. When you throw some really good airflow into the equation, everything changes. Even a slight air current will move that stagnent air out of the way. Increase airflow and, duh, youll get better results. If you are bent on having your computer on the desk, grab a house fan, or a small deskfan and have it blowing over the components. Personally, I would think a good case with awsome airflow would bring the best results, due to the wind tunnel effect that you get with good case cooling. Anywho, good luck, hope my ramblings helped at least a little bit.
