Hey gang, a newbie here to this forum... after reading some things I couldnt believe the low temps people were worrying about... I am running a duron 800 in a computer desk, my apt is usually about 25+ C and my temps are
case - 23
cpu - 36 idle, 52 under load, AFTER buying a high power exhaust fan.. I was up to 58, when it was only 30 outside... today was 35 and now I am only 52.
I have a 80mm lower front, 80 mm high power under the PS, a HDD cooler in a bay above my HD and the PS blowing out, with a high power (7000 rpm) fan on my CPU.
I am seriously trying to cool this sucker off but without luck... I am seriously thinking about water cooling but its beyond my budget at the time so I am thinking maybe a duct.
After reading all the posts here I will try some tweaking tonight and see what I can do but I cant see anything really helping.... And taking the side off the case doesnt do anything.
thanks for any help!!
well if taking the side off your case doesnt do anything, you case is pretty well cooled, i would recommend getting a better heat sink for your cpu if you want better cooling. checkhere (http://www.overclockers.com/articles373/) for a roundup of a ton of sinks.
keep the questions coming if you have problems, and...

Heatsink! Get yourself a nice copper Heatsink from a reliable company (Vantec, Thermaltake, Coolermaster) and then Lap it when you get it. Also get some Arctic Silver III. I just started OCing my hunk o junk, and Ive only added/changed a few things. Put a Vantec Heatsink and Fan (lapped with ASIII) and then took the old fan and put it at top rear of my case as exhaust. Temps are now equal or lower than when the CPU was at stock speed. And its SUMMER! Ambient temp is usually around 95 during the day, and even under load, temps dont go higher than 105. Anywho, long story short, new Heatsink with some good thermal compound will really help.
My two bits :rolleyes:

what do u mean by lapping. How do u do it?

You sand it down to have more even surface, and to be shinier (sp? I butchered that word...;))
This article will gve you the basics of lapping;

BTW, Trekker9876, welcome to the forums. I would recommend you do a little modifying of your case, and go for 92mm or 120mm fans for intake and exhaust. You'll get higher airflow and in most cases better cooling, and also keep noise levels down.

since you said that taking off your side doesnt do anything i dont see how a duct could help, its all going to fall down to the heatsink and all of us here love arctic silver 3 (a thermal paste).

thanks everyone... I dropped the temp by a couple of degrees by cleaning up the cables which were seriously blocking airflow and by turning the heatsink fan backwards tro blow against the heatsink.. I cant get a new heatsink because it is GLUED to the cpu becasue the nob broke to attach the fan (NOT MY DOING) SO the only choice was new MB or glue the cpu with heat glue.
I will get another 4000 rpm fan soon and install that and it will help.. thanks again everyone!

yeah a higher cfm fan would help but that glue might not have a very good heat transfer and could be causing all of your problems (not sure tho) ...sorry to hear that you had to do that.

how many of the lugs are broken off. you could get a heat sing that uses the 4 mounting holes. if you have atleast one lug on each side of the socket you can get an ax-7 the baddest heat sink there is it has a clip which uses all three lugs on both sides so it doesnt matter if theres one missing. and seing as the heat sing is glued it probably doesnt have sufficant preasure to make correct contact with the cpu which would keep your load temp down.
