How much cooler are we talking when plugging the core fan into a 4pin adapter and straight into the PSU?

Not very much difference. Now if you had a bigger fan than a stock one it would be a different storry. The little stock fan hardly does anything. You could get a Blorb or some other type of chipset cooler to get it a little cooler. Check out 2cooltek.com (http://www.2cooltek.com); they have some very nice video card coolers.
