ok so i got the wife to let me upgrade my whs 2011 server, i have a q6600 in it now, and fold on 3 cores and last one does video transcoding, slowly.... so i have been looking at getting new hardware for some time and now i can, only issue i have is i can think of 3 good choices but not sure what would be the best, on the new hardware i get what i would like to do is be able to run f@h, video transcoding for streaming mkv's and so on to the ps3 and xbox 360, and i have 4 family members that will upload and download to it at lease 2-3 times a week, as well as me downloading from it when i need too, and i would like it to be able to do it all much faster... lol now on to the 3 choices i have came to.

#1
Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UP4 TH LGA 1155 Intel Z77 ATX Int
Intel Core i5 3570K 3.4GHz LGA 1155 Processor

#2
GA-970A-UD3 Socket AM3+ 970 ATX AMD Motherboard
FX 8320 Black Edition

#3
ASUS KCMA-D8 ATX Server Motherboard Dual Socket C32 AMD SR5670 DDR3 1333/1066/800
2 x AMD Opteron 4226 Valencia 2.7GHz Socket C32

i have a total of $500 +/- a little, and i only need a mobo and cpu, i have, case, psu, ram, hd's, that i will be reusing, i have been leaning more towards the server board and 2 cpus, but i dont know how they will do with f@h which is high on the priority list, then transcoding, and so on. is there another option that may be better, or any recommendations as to what would work best???

I did a quick search and couldn't find anything so I hope this isn't a dupe :P Basically I am doing a new build and have a nice case with a mesh front (Corsair Carbide 500R). I would love to just leave the DVD drive external, as there is only about a 5-10 price diff. I have read tons of conflicting results on booting from external dvd drives though. Honestly, I barely use the thing so I think I can get by fine on an external if I can boot from it. I don't think it will be a problem, but I figured I'd ask before buyin one :P The motherboard I have on the way is an MSI Z77A-GD65.
Thanks,

Hey Everyone,

Im hoping i'll find some help here..... :)

I'm currently bitcoin mining and looking for some help to reduce GPU Temps... Primarily through the reduction in Memory Clock Speed. I have read several threads and done everything they say, but i'm running into some problems. Mostly the blue screen of death.

Rig #1
2 x Radeon 5770, crossfired (runs at good temp, mid 60's)
1 x Radeon 5970
Wndows 7
MSI Afterburner 3.0.0 Beta 9
Catalyst Control Centre/drivers 11.12
**I did at one point have AMD GPU Clock Controller installed, but it couldn't recognize any hardware**

I decided to open up the 6990 to clean it up and add some Arctic Silver 5 for better heat dissapation. Well... I think it was one of those things, if it aint broken, don't fix it! Before, @880MHZ and Memory @ 625Mhz, both processors would be hovering around the 80^c. Still fairly hot, and this is with other fans circulating air. Now i've had to underclock @ 750MHZ and 625MHZ memory, it's still hovering around 80^C. I've tried this Arctic Silver 5 on other GPU's with great results, so not sure what happened here. Anyways, it could have been the Thermal Pads for the Memory, which I may replace later on. But they looked good and intact. Anyways, before I do anything drastic again, like by a Arctic 6990 Cooler or clean out the 6990 again... i thoguht i'd try underclocking my memory to 300Mhz.

I've tried the two main things i've read in forums:
- edit the CFG file
- Bring memory down to lowest, closing Afterburner, then opening to reduce more...

Neither worked! :(

I was hoping that altering the CFG would have worked, but I kept getting the blue screen of death after about a minute of Windows starting. Or after immediately opening Afterburner. Also, I altered all CFG files while under safemode. I cant edit CFG while in non-safemode.

Can anyone help? It seems every CFG file i see edited to work is different from the next. Do I have the right drivers... etc... etc...

Anyhelp would be greatly appreciated.

Thinking about upgrading my current PC (taking parts from old build and buying the ones listed below), and I have thought about these parts for awhile now, but I wanted some different perspectives.
*I like being up to date and on the bleeding edge.

Some info, this rig is for gaming / streaming 1080p, and I run 3x 27in monitors. Sometimes I play on 1, sometimes I play on 3. (Depending on game)

I am going to OC my CPU / GPU to stable clocks.
If you have any suggestions or thoughts about the build, drop a post.
*Money is not an issue.
Thanks.

Got a question for anyone that has experience with this. Working on a project upgrading three workstations in a local restaurant. Their point of sale software is a bit older (company only has it certified for XP, owner doesn't want to switch). New computers are installed and working for the most part. This issue is with his cash drawer that is attached via a DB25 to DB9 cable. The cash drawer is unpowered, gets everything it needs from the Serial connection.

Each computer has a SYBA PCI to Serial 4-port Controller card installed in it (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815124019). Information about the card looks like it is suppose to support 5V power on these connections (I do not know how much the old system was providing, waiting on a call from their tech support on this).

My question is since these are older devices and the newer serial ports seem to provide less power since it is not really used today, is a USB to Serial adapter going to provide additional power? I know the USB port provides enough power, but will that get transferred to the cash drawer? I'm looking at this one maybe

http://www.amazon.com/Valley-Enterpr...srch_res_rtr_1

The description doesn't say anything and none of the reviews really reference older hardware in the way. The cash drawer has a small circuit board a capacitor that charges after each cycle. The drawer will open 85% of the time, would just like to get this resolved so there isn't any issue.

Thanks for anything! Questions let me know, or if anything wasn't clear.

I just replaced my 120mm cpu noctua fan with the stock intel fan. The intel fan is a little noisy half the time, even when not running any programs, it makes a annoying sound kinda like a muffled whistle very hard to describe. If I'm not running any programs is it normal for the cpu fan fluctuate ? it's got to be fluctuating cause sometimes I hear it sometimes I don't.

I have the Asus P8P67 with a i5-2500 cpu

Anyway I went into bios and it seems like it's running at around 1400 rpms is that normal ?

I enabled the silent option and I'm at the desktop I can still hear a whistle. I tried the manual option instead at running 100% duty cycle I put 80% I can still hear it. How come when I change settings it's not taking effect ? thanks

By the way the fan hooks up to mobo with a 4pin connector, aren't 4pin fan connectors controllable ? I thought it was the 3pin fans connectors that were the ones not controllable

Hows the water cooling market pricing wise? more to the point has the pricing been lowering or pretty much stable for long term?

Reason i'm asking is i expect my next gpu I buy will be a water block mounted gpu and I'm debating adding a 3rd rad now to compensate for it later if the market is rather stable.

This will do two things.

It will let me know if my current 2 rads "1x120mm RX XSPC and 2x120mm RX XSPC rads" are holding strong with my cpu/board heatsink's and the overclocks I have currently.

And also allow me to upgrade later to a gpu block with only having to buy the block.

I'm thinking I will go external with a rad and stand and just run modded fan wires out the back of case.

probably use this.

along with this

Also wondering if you think a single pump is still acceptable for these 3 rads in a semi long loop.

d5 pump.

Thoughts ?

I've also debated doing a entirely external rad solution with quick disconnects but its hard to find suitable external chassis for this now there used to be a nice one from i think mountain mods? but no longer available.

i expect if i wanted to do that id have to build one from wood.
