Hi, I removed the fan from my PIII 550MHZ Slot 1 CPU as I need to make a completely silent setup for my purposes. Anyway, now the temperature of the CPU rises towards the 50 degrees mark. Is this too high? I guess so and need a passive heatsink, correct?
Thanks ps. I of course have not overclocked.

The thermal threshold for a PIII 550mhz is much higher than 50*
The Max Thermal Spec is somewhere between 78*to 85°C depending on the stepping.

Your safe at that temp. but people generally like to keep them below 50*c As far as a passive heatsink, generally passive means without a fan on the heatsink, with a fan on it you will get cooler temps for sure.
