I got an x800 xt AIW for xmas

runnin on a athlon xp 3000+ 2.17 ghz
(2 X 512) pc3200 @ 400mhz
350w psu
2 optical drives, 2hdd's used

the card isnt running much faster than my 256 mb 9800 pro
you guys think my cpu is creating a bottleneck? i want to upgrade to 64 bit so im hoping it will be powerful enough to keep the gpu busy

I would say that your chipset is limiting you more than anything. The KT400 chipset wasn't the greatest. What are you getting for 3DMark Scores? Try 03 and 05. That will let us know if there is something else that may be a problem.

First off...
WELCOME TO THE FORUMS!!

As bchur said... could you give us some scores? Also, did you clean up your drivers and install the newest catalyst? That MAY help.

Compare the 3DMark scores to your 9800pro... I'm curious about the difference in scores... they may explain a bit. :)

im installing 3dmark 05 right now ill post the scores as soon as im done, would it help if i put my 9800 pro back in and test with it as well?

9800 wont help being put back in, the x800 will beat out the 9800PRO and only be limited by your CPU pending on what games you are playing your new card IS better then the 9800 PRO.

I got the same card for christmas too! I upgraded from an fx5200 though, so I'm happy with the upgrade. Keep us updated, I'm interested to see how it works out for you.l

The card itself is good
im running call of duty 2:
1024X768 resolution all settings on high with ansiostropic and 2xAA
Quake 4:
high settings 1280x1024 resolution and 2xAA

the framerates are usually smooth but i was thinking it would be a little faster

9800 pro:

3DMark Score 2788 3DMarks Game Tests
GT1 - Return To Proxycon 12.6 FPS Game Tests
GT2 - Firefly Forest 8.5 FPS Game Tests
GT3 - Canyon Flight 12.9 FPS Game Tests
CPU Score 2091 CPUMarks CPU Tests
CPU Test 1 1.0 FPS CPU Tests
CPU Test 2 2.0 FPS CPU Tests

x800 xt:

3DMark Score 5463 3DMarks Game Tests
GT1 - Return To Proxycon 22.6 FPS Game Tests

GT3 - Canyon Flight 26.5 FPS Game Tests
CPU Score 2171 CPUMarks CPU Tests

That's a huge jump in scores if ya ask me. :)

Hmmm maybe it was just that when i loaded up FEAR, my sytem crawled on its knees, it was the most pathetic site i had ever seen. oh well thanks for the help guys i appreciate it!

Fear is an extremely demanding game, even for todays newer cards. Your score of 5463 is good considering you're still on an A-XP. The only way you are going to get 60+FPS is if you're using a 9700 Pro and your user id is OC550

im prolly going to volt mod my old 9800 sometime this week when i get water cooling ill let you know what kind of benchmarks i get

LOL. now that was just mean.

F.E.A.R. is indeed a very demanding game. There are some good tweak guides out there to help you with the settings to get it to run more smoothly. Firstly, make sure you have defragged the drive that FEAR is installed on after the installation. Soft shadows gives a huge performance hit so make sure that is turned off as well.

AND THAT'S THE TRUTH! lol... he's obsessed with Radeon 9500-9800 cards. :)

i dont blame him

my old 9800 was the best card ive ever had

2 years later it can still run any game out there on high settings

edit: except fear

not in terms of power

maybe i should have said best INVESTMENT. it was one the best cards you could get at the time (tried to flash it to XT but it didnt work) and its still great today
