Dual Boot?
Is it possible to Dual boot windows98se and Mandrake 8.1? im pretty sure ive heard of people doing this and i would have a clue as to where to start
|
Yes it as long as you currently have win98 already installed you can either press F1 when the Mandrake cd boots and type in LNX4WIN at the command prompt all this will do is create a folder within windows that will house Linux. It will also make linux run slower. The better way is to run the recommended setup by Mandrake and re partition your hd in order to format some of it and use Mandrakes filesystem. Once you are all through the setup and configured your comp will reboot and you will notice you have a few choices to boot, Linux, Windows, floppy, and I think a few more. Choose linux and finish your setup and viola all done!
Need more help just let me know J |

Linux will still allow you to use Windows. It will set up a boot menu for you to choose each time you boot.

Before doing that I highly recommend getting a copy of Partition Magic and just create a partition for Linux and for the Linux swap file from your free space. For me it is easier to do and in case you want to make changes to the Linux partition i.e. make it larger or smaller you can do that from within windows without having to reinstall Linux altogether.

about 20 minutes after i started this thread i figured it out and i made two 60gig partitions one for linux and one for windows2k and windows98se
|
60 is WAY too much for Linux - you only need 10-15G at most....
|
Yea, you only need to feed Linux 60gb if you are seriously planning to use it as your main OS, and even then, that space would be going towards holding huge movies, tons of mp3s, large game installs, etc.

my hardrives fill very, very, quickly, wiht mp3s and movies and games and big big apps, im no longer running my hardrives in RAID now either.

Linux used to reside on a 20GB Reiser partition but it wasn't even 33% full. I have Windows XP on one 15GB partition and I will soon have Linux (SuSE) on another 14GB.
