E4300 lacks x86 virtualization.

greetings,

i plan on building a E4300/965P system, and want
to dual boot with XP/FreeBSD or XP/OpenBSD and
sometimes knoppix.

i read a little on x86 virtualization, and it sounds like
it's used to boot into another OS while in another.

will not having x86 virtualization hold me back
from using UNIX/Linux? (booting from POST)

i believe the virtualization the chip lacks has nothing to do with anything that would effect normal people. As in, the chip will still run 32-bit windows and 32-bit (i386) *nix, as well as having 64bit extensions to run amd64.

so if i were to run FreeBSD and want the 64 Bit
flavor, i'd use the AMD64 port.

The virtualization in the chips helps with things like Xen, Kernel Virtual Machines, and it allows you to run a 64bit OS inside a 32bit OS.

If you just want to dual boot, you will not be affected. Only if you want to do Virtualization stuff. The VT technology will allow you to run unmodified OS's in Xen. OS's like Windows, because without VT technology, that wouldn't be possible with Xen, because without the technology, it would require that you customize the kernel, and you can't do that in windows.

ah, i see. sounds like something i wont ever use. least not on my personal
gamming/encoding rig.
