Like the title, I just bought a PIII 933 from a friend, and after looking at the chip, noticed it doesn't have any markings on it saying speed, stepping, etc.

is this normal?

Eh what's that black thing near the bottom???
If I remember well that's where the CPU markings are on my Celeron tualatin

um you sure that is a 933???
it looks more like a REMARKED 700 to me.....
as the black looks all scratched.....
and that is were the CPU speed is ALWAYS PRINTED.

I'd put money down that, that CPU is really a 700E, marking removed and sold as a 900EB

EDIT/ added
I would download this from intel....
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/File_Filter.asp?FileName=fidenu
Intel® Processor Frequency ID Utility, tell you what the CPU really is

i prefer cpu-z as it can tell you a lot more about your proccessor (and system for that matter)

IIRC cpuid doesn't display the cpu's original default speed does it?

That looks like its been painted over...cause you can still a part of the text in the top left corner of the blackness...
You may be able to get that stuff off....

I'll have to install windows on it before I can run any of those programs.

About the white mark, I took a knife and scratched around on the black part only to reveal more white stuff. I doubt that there is any writing under it, unless it's under the white also.

I'll play with it some more tonight.
