I needed to re-install xp and after I format and get to the setup screen, some of the files can't be read and it says to check disk, etc. I was using a copy of xp (which worked before) so I got the original and tried that. Same deal. Any suggestions? Thanks.

try giving the cd drive a clean, Mine kept on sayinh that the files where corrupt so i got the vacum cleaner opened the bay door and gave it a good blast then a CD drive clean......did the trick

Its a brand new drive and I actually tried an older drive and it did the same thing. I'll try it nonetheless. Thanks for your help.

Perhaps the data or power cable is bad. Try also disabling dma, and set to PIO mode. The controller may be bad as well.
