Anybody got any suggestions? I'm building a new system and am kinda fed-up with having a 110- or 220-volts water pump that needs external power. I have yet to find a 12-volts water pump that's both quiet, able to run 24/7 and doesn't draw 3...5 amps from the 12-volts line.

Looking forward to your replies.

Kind regards,

Sander Sassen

I have the Eheim 1250 pump and it is very quiet. Just get a relay which can be found at www.swiftnets.com and you won't have any problems with external power.

I was just going to recomemnd that. A very good product indeed.

Not only is it quiet, it's reliable ;) However, 20 bucks insurance for a working system ... anyday.

Any 12volt pump will draw more current than a 110 / 220 volt equivalent pump, as you have to increase the current at a lower voltage to get the same power, obviously. I have a low voltage AC pump that operates at 24volts AC, but like you say, it draws more current, and I didn't use it in the end as it was noisy. Plus 12 volt pumps would use a DC motor, not a mag drive, and standard DC motors are much less reliable than a mag drive. I'd stick with the 110 / 220 volt AC variety and switch it with a relay as suggested above. Welcome to the forums as well :)

Most known 12V pumps for continuous use in WC are the Johnson pumps (http://www.johnsonmarinepumps.com/specialty_pumps/Specialty_Pages/Circulating_Pumps.htm), especially the CM10 and CM30 series, or the (equal to the CM10) 59500-12 Jabsco pump (http://tzar.nxtranet.com/prodInfoApp/servlet/DisplayProducts?typeId=JMGCR&page=0).
Also very well known are the Iwaki pumps.

CD:)
