Can thermal pads be used instead of thermal grease?

While you could use a thermal pad, it will not work as well as a good quality compound such as Arctic Silver...Fine for stock comps that aren't going to be overclocked, but for that price you may as well invest in some of the good stuff...

Do you plan on running the machine at stock speeds???
If so, I guess you can go with that pad...If not, get some AS3. :D

You need to be careful with the ASIII though. Apply too liberally and you'll accidentally connect some bridges on the CPU (thus rendering it useless).

Hmmm. Found one website (lost the link Grrr) where they tried using toothpaste as thermal goop.

It worked fine - but they feared that after extended use, the toothpaste would dry out - and prove useless. However, if it's for a couple of days only, the verdict was 'Go with toothpaste'.

Hmmm....

No but as it contains silver particles it can connect the bridges...just make sure that you wipe off any overspill and follow the instructions.
