is a patch cable the same thing as a regular CAT5 cable, or is it a Crossover cable?

patch cable is just plain straigh through cable, it is not x-over cable. for connecting hubs to nics, or routers to nics, or switches to nics, or patch pannels to nics, you need a pass throught, or patch cable.

you only need an x-over cable when connecting same osi- level items to eachother, i hope this helps :D
