what da hell is SVCHOST and why do I need it?

Im trying to turn off as many processes as posible with the task manager except for my video card and cd.

SVCHOST shows up twice when i boot up in safe mode and when I boot up "normal" it comes up like 5 times in the task manager.

What gives?

Service host is hosting a service (creative, huh?). Some proggie that's running as a service needs svchost to run to get it running in the services. The svchost uses virtually no resources, so just check the linkjrbob gave you to check on what you have running.

Windows 2000/XP only. SVCHOST is a generic process which acts as a host for other processes running from DLLs. Depending on the configuration of your system there may be more than one instance of SVCHOST showing in the Task List.

Recommendation :
An integral part of the operating system, leave alone. If you experience SVCHOST errors, the problem is most likely not with SVCHOST but with the DLLs it is hosting.

Other programs use svhost to access the internet, or at least thats my understanding. There is an actuall program behind each instance of svhost. I ahve never been able to really understand how to figure out what each is. At least thats my understanding, I could be wrong.
