OK i have never had more than 1 operating systems on my computers, but the issue came up that i was really annoyed with all of my brother's stuff, he never keeps it organized and installed a porn dialer and smut kept popping up  , even through the firewall. So i wanted to install a second harddrive and put 2000 on the second HDD, the original HDD had XP. So i go and install this harddrive and format the second one with the windows 2000 setup and complete the installation, but then i cant boot to the XP system, even though it gives me the OS choices menu. One thing that did change once i installed 2000 on the second harddrive was that it did not say please choose: "Microsoft Windows XP Home OR Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional"; it said please choose: "Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional OR Microsoft Whistler Personal", what is Whistler  Anyway I can still access the old files (including the rubbish), but i cant boot to XP it says files are missing or corrupt. So i uninstall the second harddrive and still no dice. I managed to get a backup of all of the files over teh network by booting to 2000 and using my other computer, but now after reformatting i want to do a dual boot system with 2 different harddrives, and i need a little help, so if any one could give me instructions on how to get 2 operating systems i would greatly appreciate it.

I have the following hardware available:
Harddrives available for use as IDE SLAVE (Either one will accept win2k):
-1 6GB HDD, unformatted
-1 13GB HDD, FAT32
Primary HDD
- 1 80 GB HDD IDE MASTER, 1 partition, NTFS, win XP PRO installed

I'm not sure if I ever confirmed it, but I remember reading that the Windows2000 bootloader will screw up Windows XP.

Whistler is Microsoft's code name for Windows XP Home. Nothing serious.

To get back to XP, find the XP disc, and boot from it. Navigate through the options, look for something along the lines of "Repair". Navigate through more options, select manual repair. Have it "Inspect the Boot Sector" and nothing else. Then let it run its course.

I haven't installed XP in about a month, so I can't give you specifics on the setup program. Hopefully someone else can do that. :D

Start your computer by using the Windows Setup floppy disks or the Windows XP CD-ROM. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press F10 or press R to repair, and start the Windows Recovery Console.

Then type in this

bootcfg /scan

or

bootcfg /add

or

bootcfg /rebuild

thanks!!

many thanks about dealing with the problem, however do you know how to do a dual boot with xp and 2000 when xp is already installed? Thanks again

Dual booting is easy if you remember two golden rules.\\

1 install in the order OLDEST to newest operating system

2 Use differant partitions for each OS.

There are ways and means around but stick to the above and you cant go wrong.

if u install 2000 after xp all u have to do is tell xp to rebuild the boot.ini
