What exactly determines what sort of processor core you can use on your motherboard. Is it the FSB speed, the core itself, or some other factor. I've always been under the impression that the core type is transparent to the chipset and that something like the FSB speed was the dependent factor, because the chipset relies on a certain clock generator frequency.
Any help appreciated,

Your impression is generally correct.

Here is what I think the limitations are in order of what is likely to stop the overclock going higher:

Ram
CPU
Graphics card
HDD (if the pci bus gets too high)
Soundcard
chipset
