say i had 150 bucks laying around, or around that....what would be the better bang for my buck? If i overclock it wont be by much...but my choices are:

GF4 ti4200
GF4 ti4800se

ati 9500pro
ati 9600np/pro (less pixel shaders make a diff here?)

Right now i have a GF3 ti200 overclocked to stock ti500 speeds, and getting tired of lagging in SWG. How much difference would it make if my card was dx9.0 compatable compared to the nvidia ones that are not? Thanks for the help...

The 9600 has less pixel pipelines, not pixel shaders. Pixel pipelines are the mechanisms which generate the pixels themselves. Yes, they do make a difference, and yes, the 9600 is pretty bad.

I'd also reccommend a 9500 non-pro for $130 at allstarshop.com. Not only do you have a chance of softmodding it to a 9700, but if you can't, you're still left with a pretty decent card which when overclocked is faster than an overclocked 9600 pro.

Of those cards the 9500pro is the best.

The 9600 has other deficiencies other that the pixel shaders, for instance it has about half the core transistors of the 9500pro. It would run cooler however. I run DX9 on my Radeon 8500 and it's no problem.

And I heard that the ti4800 has exactly the same core it's just clocked higher than the ti4200. But don't quote me on that.

Yes. All GF4 Tis use the same basic core.
Ti4200: 250/444 or 250/513
Ti4400: 275/550
Ti4600: 300/650
Ti4800: Ti4600 with AGP 8x
Ti4800se: Ti4400 with AGP 8x

A Ti4200 with AGP 8x is just called a Ti4200.

kinda off-topic, but how come you have an avatar already? i mean, youre a new memeber

look at the joined date, he was a member before that rule was put into effect so i assume he either had an avatar before or his account isn't restricted.

from that list i would go with the 9500Pro, but good luck finding one for $150.

the TI4800 is a TI4600 with AGP 8X support i belive.... i'm pretty sure that's what i read.

Could you elaborate on this a little more? *edit* why is it only a chance?

btw i really appritiate the help guys, you rock. john240sx i found one for like 180 something, so 30 extra bucks isnt any biggie if its going to make a dramatic difference compared to the other cards.

its only a chance because a lot of the time it fails and u are left with the 9500 np iv heard that its anywhere from less than 30% up to 70% succesful, if i had the choice and could get a 9500 pro for 150$ i would get that.

if someone finds a 9500 pro for $150 from a reputable source (and I pray you do) POST LINK PLZ because I'd love to jump on that

seriously though, I doubt you can find it anywhere for under $180

nah its not for 150, i meant around 150....they run usually about 180ish, worth the extra 30 bucks if you ask me...

btw thanks for the advice guys!

*edit* it looks like someone fixed the bios on the 9500np/pro and 9700np to be overclockable:

i guess the new bios changes one hex value alowing software overclocking through the registry. One guy had his 9500pro up to 9700pro speeds it looks like.....anyone try this out?

It's bean said to death, but I'd also get the 9500 Pro. I would not take the chance of so called softmod for the 9500 non-pro, it's just too risky. The 9500 Pro is a very fast card and really, you can't go wrong with it.

On a side note: The overclocked Ti200 should be good enough to play SWG. I'm now wondering what kind of system you are running, maybe the money would be better spent on CPU / MoBo / Memory.

well i want to take full advantage of how beautiful that game is....and its just not possible with my ti200. I have a p4 2.53ghz (intel mobo) with 512 of 2700mmry. So its not a matter of my system being too slow, its just bottlenecked at the card. I can run the game fine with no details on the buildings, no shadows, and little floral, but i want all of it...can you blame me? Not to mention i want to upgrade before Half Life 2 comes out.
