I need a HDTV for:
1st main use would be as a PC monitor
2nd use to watch DVD's
3rd for watching tv/hdtv

I been looking for 3 months now and really wanted to get one before xmas. But do to stupid salesmen, marketing hype, and mainly the hit and miss people are getting using HDTV's with PC's. My old 32" sharp looks great @1024x768 using s-video from my radeon 9700 and I can easly read the text. I understand many HDTV's can't even do 1280x1024 from a PC. Worst of all when you look at the spec's they all say they will run 1080i but the res is only 1280x768. Yea sure I can look at a 6 megapixel picture on old TV too, but I sure ain't seeing 5 m/p on screen.

My budget is $1500 or less, and it must be 16:9. Size don't matter as my living room is small. But it must do at least 1920x1080 as a PC monitor and have dvi input. Am I dreaming or does this beast exist for less than a small fortune ?

Is anybody getting 1920x1080 from their PC/HDTV at any price ?

From my limited knowledge of HDTVs I know that 768p is 1280x768 progressive which means all 768 vertical lines of resolution are being drawn to the screen at the same time. 1080i is 1920x1080 interlaced which means the odd vertical lines are drawn in the first 1/60th of a second then the even lines are drawn in the second 1/60th of a second to give you 30 fps.

It sounds to me like you want to run 1920x1080 progressive which at this time isnt possible since there arent HDTVS out yet that are capable of this but will probably be out late this year or sometime next year. However they will be nowhere close to the 1500 max you want to spend.

I am pretty sure the highest resolution you will be able to get on a HDTV from your computer is 1280x768 since I dont think PC video cards are capable of do interlaced resolutions like 1080i.

So I think you want to be shopping for a display that is fixed at 768p but I really think you are going to have trouble finding a good one for around 1500 but I may be wrong since I dont keep up with HDTV pricing.

for a 16:9 montor doing that you're out of luck for that price range I think, the sony 24" GDM-FW900 will do as high as 2304 x 1440, but that's $1999, also not positive if it is actualy 16:9, it is wider than a 4:3 though, most decent 21-22" CRT's can do that resolution though and can be had for $1000 or less, just they are 4:3 so you will have the letterbox bars on the top and bottom.

shiltz,
