you can but it may throw off your cooling...some cases dont get good air flow while the sides are off. but if you have bad case cooling to begin with it may help...I would try it both ways and see what your temps are.

can't i just run my comp w/ the side panel off when I'm overclocking so it'll cool down

Your CPU can be very picky about temps if you want to overclock it invest in a good HSF [copper] and get a few case fans should only set you back about 40 bucks you really need it if you want to overclock that CPU.
