Both are important, but the bottleneck for most people is the upload speed, (which is usually considerably lower for most ISP's).
It never hurts to get more UL bandwidth... especially if you're planning on running a dedicated server.

For a BF server you need 40k per person. So with a 234 up load you could do a server for 5 maybe 6 people.

the best thing I can tell you is goto the web chat....here.
just type in your name and hit chat.
d/l teamspeak2 as well.....here.
we will help you set up TS2 in the "web chat"
the nights we play are tues, thurs, and fri
we start at 10:00pm EST
each tuesday we have a little clan meeting starting at 9:50pm EST
