I have a dell inspiron 3800 laptop and the drive in it is starting to go. now its got a 4200 travelstar that it came with. I am wondering if there are any compatablity issues of going with a faster drive, either a 5400 or even a 7200, or would this just be a bad idea cause of added heat, additional power consumption isnt an issue because I run dual batteries. As of right now my number one drive in consideration is probably the 40gb toshiba 4200rpm drive http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=22-149-014&depa=1
or the samsung 40gb 5400 rpm drive. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=22-152-501&depa=1

If they are laptop HDD then I wouldent think there would be a problem with upgrading it, and if you are worried about heat you could always put some fans in there while you put the HDD in.

There shouldn't be any compatibility issues, however heat is always a concern with a laptop. I don't really know how much hotter a 7200rpm hard drive is than a 5400rpm one, though, so I can't really help you there.
