i installed powerzip to use .tar files, and now that i have uninstalled it, all of my zip files no long have the extract option when i right click.

thanks a bunch. and this is on zip files and everything

What OS Phillip?

Either way, as far as I recall, XP can open some compressed files, but you have to open them like they are a folder and pull out the files within them - never used the extract function if XP has it built in.

For w2k, I thought it didn't natively recognize zips and other compressed files, and needed third party support?

Try unregistering, then re-registering the XP (assuming you're running XP) ZIP component. Type the following line in the Run box...

regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll

Reboot your system, then type (also in the Run box)...

regsvr32 zipfldr.dll
